The Dental Hygiene Unit of the Allied Health Department at Hostos Community College seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin Spring 2024.
The Dental Hygiene Program leads to an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree for students who successfully complete the course of study. Students are prepared to become registered dental hygienists and pass intensive theory National Board and Clinical State Board examinations. Passing both examinations is required for licensure and employment.
The Dental Hygiene Program offers a two and three year course of study which includes summer. Students provide preventive dental health care at the on-site dental hygiene patient care facility for patients under direct guidance and supervision of licensed professional dental hygienists and dentists. The community has access to free dental hygiene care and oral health maintenance. Graduates are eligible to transfer to senior colleges. All eligible students are encouraged to apply for the various academic and health profession scholarships and to join both the local and national Student American Dental Hygienist Association (SADHA). Awards for achievement include the Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler Award, the New York City Dental Hygienist Association Clinical Proficiency Award, the American Dental Association Professional Achievement Award, and the Dental Hygiene Program Student Achievement Award. Dental hygienists find employment in private dental practices, public and private health agencies, hospitals, industrial clinics, government agencies, the U.S. Armed Services, Peace Corps, World Health Organizations, and dental hygiene schools.
The successful candidate will provide instruction to Dental Hygiene students; support the missions of the department, college, and university; participate in faculty meetings, student recruitment and advising, curriculum development, and other departmental activities; develop and maintain relationships with all program faculty; engage in research and other scholarly activities; use emerging technologies to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of instruction and the department; monitor and facilitate ethical and professional behaviors, and serve as mentors, peer counselors, and colleagues for teaching and community clinical projects; other duties assigned based on the needs of the unit and department. Performs research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise and shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative and supervisory work. Essential duties require on-campus presence.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
The following qualifications are preferred:
Master's Degree In Dental Hygiene or higher; Master's Degree in related discipline or higher
Two (2) years of clinical experience In Dental Hygiene including periodontal therapy
Excellent communication and Interpersonal skills
Successful experience with diverse populations
Ability to form an Inclusive environment that respects diverse talents and ways of learning
Commitment to excellence in teaching and clinical skills
Prior teaching experience in dental assisting and dental hygiene program
Available to work evening hours when needed
COMPENSATION
$82,928; salary commensurate with education and experience.
