The newly established Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) Department at UC San Diego, part of the School of Physical Sciences, was created in March 2023. The A&A department builds upon the legacy of a half-century of exemplary astrophysical programs at UC San Diego, previously housed in the Center for Astrophysics & Space Sciences research unit. Departmental research is organized into groups comprising faculty, research staff, undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, fellows, and support staff. It currently has a Ph.D. program and is in the process of implementing BA and BS programs.
Under the general supervision of a Principal Investigator, the Research Data Analyst will be a part of the team that develops software for astronomical instruments and associated astronomical science data products. The incumbent will design in-house data simulations and data processing codes for astronomical instruments. The incumbent will play a role in the research program by developing techniques involving astronomical data reductions and simulations of near-infrared and optical data sets with imagers and advanced spectrographs. Participates in formulating the development processes to meet the goals of the research project, including timelines, schedules, instrument assembly, and installations. Prepares technical reports for internal meetings as well as external collaboration meetings on research project status. Performs other laboratory support duties, including participating in the testing of software with instrument hardware.
In coordination with co-investigators, the incumbent will develop and manage data products and software packages from a variety of optical and near-infrared astronomical instruments. The incumbent will use and learn astronomical technical skills as a seasoned, experienced research professional with a full understanding of in-depth statistical analyses and research software programming techniques; and will demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. The position requires excellent skills in communication and documentation.
The incumbent will be working in the Optical and Infrared Laboratory, which is responsible for designing, building, and deploying astronomical instrumentation for optical telescopes and observatories.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with astronomical databases and data products. Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming. Strong data analysis skills using experimental Physics and Astrophysics as a basis.
Strong experience with scientific methods and research design. In-depth experience with astronomical research protocols. Thorough knowledge of research function.
Strong general programming skills, preferably using Python and IDL.
Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with engineers and research staff. Skilled in communication of data reports to both technical and non-technical researchers.
Demonstrated experience with data collection, management, and analysis of data using web tools, relational databases, statistical software, and spreadsheets.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 - $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 - $68.39
