About the UTC Counseling Center

The UTC Counseling Center (UTCCC) is committed to serving students and offers both in-person appointments and telehealth sessions for students located in Tennessee. We offer a variety of services to assist students in managing difficulties that may be impacting their academic and personal success while at UTC such as counseling, case management, psychiatric services, and crisis intervention.

About the Counselor Role

Counselors in the UTCCC provide counseling and psychoeducation interventions for students, through the use of individual, couples, group, and crisis counseling or interventions; as well as consultation services for faculty and staff; assess any member of the community at risk for self-harm, harm to others, diminished capacity, and risk to the campus community; and conduct assessments and referrals for students and staff; provide crisis consultation and support, as needed.

These positions collaborate with other UTCCC staff, the Office of Student Outreach & Support, Office of the Dean of Students, CARE Teams, Department of Housing & Residence Life, the UTC Police Department, and other campus partners to ensure safety and arrange higher level of care, as needed; and provide consultation and/or education to other departments, as needed.

All Counselors must maintain appropriate licenses, certifications, and continuing education to maintain a knowledge base of best practices in the field.

Some positions may provide supervision to student interns, as designated by the UTCCC director. If the position provides supervision to post-master's degree clinicians, the individual must be in compliance with the supervision licensure laws designated by the state of Tennessee.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Counseling Services

• Provide ongoing support services, such as counseling or psychoeducational interventions, for students to facilitate readiness and success on the college campus

• Engage students to make decisions that can impact personal and academic success during matriculation and beyond

• Consult and provide psychoeducation with other departments, the campus community, prospective students and families, and alumni as needed on mental health topics

• Provide risk assessment and referral for students and university staff

• Provide crisis consultation and crisis support, as needed

Administrative Services

• Coordinate with other departments and outside units, as assigned

• Make recommendations regarding expenditures for Counseling Center resources, training, travel expenses, media and electronic resources, assessments, and information management systems
• Participate in search committees and staff hiring, as needed

• Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings with clinical staff

• As qualified, this position may require supervision of other less experienced staff members, including interns

• Perform other Office, Department, Division, and/or University duties, as assigned

Outreach/Education

• Marketing/Educating mental health services to the campus community, prospective students and families, and alumni

• Collaborate with Student Development and Student Retention services to market and promote mental wellness and health services to prospective and current students and parents/caregivers

• Crisis Assessment/Support

• Suicidal/ Homicidal and Diminished Capacity assessment and referral for students/university staff

• Crisis consultation and crisis support, as needed

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

• Knowledge of evidence-based practices and current trends regarding collegiate mental health

• Skill in delivering evidence-based interventions with the college campus populations
• Knowledge of issues impacting the mental health of underserved and marginalized populations

• Ability to provide risk assessment and mental health assessment

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to use appropriate technology such as electronic health record systems and Microsoft applications

• Ability to speak in public

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related mental health field; and one year of experience (internship experience considered).

Preferred Qualifications: Licensed or working toward TN state Licensure (LPC-MHSP or LCSW); ability to supervise pre-licensed mental health professionals for TN licensure; experience providing mental health services on a college or university campus; experience working with individuals with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, or severe mental illness and other underserved populations; supervisor credential in respective mental health field.
