Position Title:  Dean of Studies (Bard High School Early College DC)

 About the Bard Early Colleges

The Bard Early Colleges are founded on the belief that many high school–age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. The Bard Early Colleges act on this belief by providing younger scholars with a tuition-free, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts and sciences following the 9th and 10th grades. Students are taught by college faculty in seminar classes; they receive up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma. The Bard Early Colleges begin preparing students for college work as early as the 9th grade and offer ongoing guidance and academic support.

Now in its second decade, the Bard Early College network serves over 3,000 students in five states and in Washington DC. Since 2003, Bard College has awarded more than 3,000 A.A. degrees to its early college students.

Position Objective and Duties 

Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) DC, a partnership between Bard College and DC Public Schools (DCPS), invites applications for a dynamic individual who will join our team as the Dean of Studies of Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) in Washington, D.C. 

This position serves as one of the early college's academic and administrative leadership team, under the general direction of the Principal of the school.  The Dean of Studies is responsible for 

• Ensuring that the school meets Bard's high standards of undergraduate academic rigor and student achievement;
• Facilitating smooth and effective collaboration with the school system partner, DCPS,  and Bard College regarding school management;
• Hiring, supporting, and supervising the faculty teaching high school and college courses across the curriculum;
• Fostering a campus culture of intellectual engagement, individual responsibility, and creativity;
• Aligning academic activities with the relevant outcomes and goals outlined for students and faculty, and will facilitate and assess the school's progress in the areas of teaching and learning. 

Duties

• Work with the Principal and faculty to refine the curriculum each semester in response to student needs, district expectations, and Bard College standards and curricular developments;
• Observe classes regularly to evaluate instruction and give feedback for improvement, identifying elements of curriculum and instruction that can be strengthened, and support faculty members with proven instructional methods (i.e. Writing and Thinking approaches);
• Facilitate inter-faculty observation and collaboration;
• Serve as master scheduler and grade reporter;
• Oversee the school's academic integrity policy;
• Assist the Principal and the Dean of Students in supporting upholding the school's Code of Conduct and supporting overall school climate;
• Assist in supervising school functions, trips, and programs
• Act as a visible, engaged, and active member of the senior leadership team and in the campus community.
• Other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications

The Dean of Studies' professional and academic experience should ideally span both secondary and postsecondary teaching and administration, and, where relevant, scholarship.

The successful candidate for the position will possess the following characteristics and qualifications:

• Master's degree in a liberal arts and or sciences discipline (corresponding to the fields available for study within the Bard curriculum).  Doctoral degree and administrative certification are preferred;
• At least five years teaching experience, preferably with both college and high school students;
• At least one year of relevant leadership experience;
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
• Strong written and oral communication skills;
• Experience with and commitment to working with adolescents;
• Commitment to equity practice and restorative justice.
