We are currently seeking a Middle School Chinese Student-Teacher or Teaching Fellow for the 2023-2024 school year. This position
Position: Middle School Chinese Student-Teacher or Teaching Fellow Reports to: Head of Middle School FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Summary The Middle School Chinese Student-Teacher/Teaching Fellow is responsible for providing a stimulating and developmentally appropriate educational environment in a way that is in accordance with the Goals and Criteria of a Sacred Heart education and the philosophy that implements it. This philosophy includes providing children opportunities to develop spiritual, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills. The Chinese Teacher is responsible to the Heads of the Lower School & Middle School and has the following responsibilities:
Essential Functions:
Teach 2 sections of Middle School Chinese and possibly coach MS or US sports if applicable.
Meet regularly with an instructional coach to learn and develop pedagogy in teaching language to middle school learners.
Conduct in-person classes and be prepared to engage in distance learning if necessary;
Organize and provide developmentally appropriate educational programs and instruction; plan and implement curriculum and differentiated instruction for middle school students;
Conduct classes in the target language as much as possible and provide ample opportunities for students to communicate in Chinese through speaking, listening, reading and writing;
Provide opportunities for exploration and discovery of Chinese culture;
Lead student-centered classes and provide activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving, appropriate to the developmental levels and learning styles of the students;
Create a supportive and caring classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another; through student-centered instruction and authentic assessment;
Maintain an open and cooperative relationship with students, colleagues and parents;
Participate in faculty and departmental meetings; performing various faculty supervisory duties.
Participate in professional development as outlined by the Head of Middle School and Language Department Chair
After one year, Sacred Heart will offer assistance in the job search for a full time position
Qualifications
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or working towards a degree in Chinese or a related field. The ideal candidate will be a native Chinese speaker with a desire to teach middle school aged students the language and culture. The ideal candidate will have good knowledge of google slides and technology to supplement their teaching.
