The Department of Physics at Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Physics to begin in the Fall of 2024. We seek a candidate who is excited about teaching and mentoring students with a variety of backgrounds, and who will help us strengthen curricular offerings in scientific computation or data science. 

The Physics Department at Skidmore offers a close community of students, faculty, and staff with active research programs and interdisciplinary collaborations. Skidmore is a highly selective, nationally ranked liberal arts college located in Saratoga Springs, New York, with a student population of 2,650, 26% of whom are domestic students of color, 11% are international students, 15% are first generation students, 19% are Pell-eligible, and 16% are students with disabilities. The successful candidate will contribute to the growing diversity and excellence of the academic community through their equitable and inclusive teaching, scholarship, and service. With its relatively low student-faculty ratio (8:1), Skidmore is known for its faculty of teacher-scholars devoted to the instruction and mentoring of undergraduates. 

A Ph.D. in physics or a related field is required. Post-doctoral research and teaching experience is beneficial, although not required. The hired candidate will be expected to teach an average of nine contact hours per semester (a section of workshop physics is five contact hours; a lecture course is three or four contact hours), develop an active undergraduate research program, advise and mentor students, and participate in departmental and college service. 

Skidmore supports faculty in many ways, including competitive start-up funds, a pre-tenure research leave, internal grants for collaborative research, a faculty learning community, funds to travel to present and for societal memberships, writing groups, and a course release in the first year. We are in the process of moving into a beautiful new building, the Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in physics or a related field is required.  Enthusiasm for equitable and inclusive teaching, mentoring, and advising practices, and the ability to develop an active research program with undergraduate collaborators, are also essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Post-doctoral research and teaching experience are beneficial although not required.

• a statement of your research plans that also includes the role of undergraduates in your research project(s), how you plan to recruit & support a diverse undergraduate research group using equitable and inclusive practices, potential journals to publish the work in & conferences to present at, potential external sources of funding, and a list of major equipment needs; 


• an equity and inclusion statement describing how you will contribute to an equitable and inclusive community in the department, at Skidmore, and/or in the field. In the process, you should articulate your expertise, experience, training, and plans regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion to expand upon what is in your other statements; 


• Letters of reference from three professional references.
