Departmental Overview
The Department of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology (NST) focuses on the metabolic biology of nutrients and toxicants in relation to human health and disease.Our research and curriculum span a breadth of topics, from the delivery of nutrients to mammalian cells and their molecular functions, through the influence of genetics on diet-associated human disease, to programs and policies that address human and environmental health and safety.

Responsibilities
Manages, plans, and administers a range of administrative operations in a small to a medium academic department, including budgetary financial management, human resources, IT, facilities, and student services.
Supervises the department's graduate student advisor (SSA3) and student staff, and directs the departmental activities of a shared staff position.
Participates actively in instructional planning, working with the Chair and departmental committees to develop, organize and implement instructional activities.
Oversees all aspects of graduate student services including recruitment, funding, and admissions.
Coordinates undergraduate affairs in collaboration with the College's Office of Instruction and Student Affairs.
Serves as primary liaison with the Dean's Office, Berkeley Regional Services, and central administrative units, acting as a unit resource to advise and facilitate faculty and student
interface and accomplish departmental goals.
Develops, projects, and monitors the departmental budget.
Prepares budgets and financial reports for funding which is complex.
Prepares and monitors the Temporary Academic Support budget to ensure maximum enrollment and that costs remain within the budget's constraint.
Reviews expenditures.
Analyzes spending patterns and advises the Chair on appropriate spending.
Recommends and implements revenue-generating programs.
Coordinates with the graduate student advisor to develop student funding packages utilizing a variety of sources and mechanisms.
Coordinates and participates in a variety of human resources activities including employment, training, classification, and ensuring the completion of forms and documents related to HR and Payroll for the department, in collaboration with Berkeley Regional Services.
Gathers, analyzes, prepares, and summarizes financial and HR reports.
Assists department chair and faculty search committees in academic personnel activities in conjunction with Regional and Dean's Office staff, including the recruitment and retention of faculty, appraisals, merits, promotions, and the hiring of adjuncts, lecturers, and other academic titles.
Coordinates with the department's Cooperative Extension Specialists.
Performs studies for resource plans, including approaches, trends, sources, and uses.
Supports the Chair with data acquisitions and analysis to inform the annual faculty FTE request and internal/external academic reviews.
Supports the Masters in Nutritional Science and Dietetics (SSGPDP), working with the program director to meet annual reporting requirements and maintain accreditation.
Works on special projects as directed by the Chair.
Maintains departmental website and manages general communications.
Takes the lead on planning departmental meetings, events, and special programs.
Assists the Chair with departmental fundraising in collaboration with the college's development team, overseeing planning for development, alumnae relations, and outreach activities.
Coordinates the use of departmental resources such as shared space and equipment.
Represents the department on college and campus committees.
Functions as the key interface with the college's facilities team.

Required Qualifications
Interpersonal skills like verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising, and counseling skills.
Knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.
Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service.
Thorough knowledge of financial analysis, reporting techniques, and/or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and build consensus to achieve goals, and to anticipate and overcome challenges to the implementation of projects and programs.
Strong skills in conflict resolution.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn University rules and regulations, processes, protocols, and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and/or personnel management.
Solid knowledge of and/or ability to quick learn common University-specific computer application programs.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $77,600.00 - $104,400.00.
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
This position is exempt and paid monthly.
