The JMP was established in 1975 as a unique 5-year medical education pathway that integrates graduate-level original research with instruction in foundational medical sciences. Currently, JMP students spend the first 2.5 years at Berkeley's School of Public Health (SPH) earning an MS degree followed by 2.5 years at UCSF leading to an MD degree. The JMP teaches the foundational medical sciences by employing a small-group, student-centered, problem- based learning (PBL) pedagogy that is founded on an inquiry approach and complements the concurrent Master's curriculum (See the JMP Principles of Education Appendix A). The JMP produces interdisciplinary physician-scholars who excel in their post-graduate professional careers. Upon graduation from the JMP, students are required to demonstrate progress toward developing competence in: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning & Improvement, Interpersonal & Communication Skills, Professionalism, Systems-Based Practice, and Interprofessional Collaboration.
