Reporting to the Commandant of Cadets, the Assistant Commandant for Academics is responsible for establishing and supervising activities fostering cadet student success. In this 12-month position, the Assistant Commandant for Academics will coordinate with staff and faculty in Colleges and Divisions across the institution to implement and maximize cadet participation in student success and retention initiatives.
The Assistant Commandant for Academics will review syllabi and course content for all Leadership Studies courses offered by Leadership & Military College.
Monitoring cadet grades throughout each semester, the Assistant Commandant for Academics will engage one-on-one with cadets who are struggling academically and mentor them to encourage use of campus resources for student support. Additionally, the Assistant Commandant for Academics will coordinate coaching of cadet leaders to develop their skills in mentoring younger cadets' academic habits and wellness habits.
The Assistant Commandant will schedule, supervise and actively participate in mandatory cadet study hall sessions that are held on campus on weekday evenings, so ability to work a flexible schedule is required. This person will also coordinate monitoring cadet grades around each semester, an engaging one on-one with cadets who are struggling academically and mentor them to encourage use of campus resources for student support.
The Assistant Commandant for Academics will serve as a liaison to the Army and Air Force Reserve
Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Programs through the Departments of Military Science and Aerospace Studies; the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course (PLC) and the Department of Leadership Studies to coordinate issues related to coursework sequencing, course descriptions, enrollment management, and adherence to grade submission timelines.
The Assistant Commandant for Academics will provide information to the Academic Advisors regarding military science requirements and course scheduling for Air Force and Army ROTC cadets. In coordination with Academic Advising, the Assistant Commandant for Academics will ensure cadets register for the correct classes, in the correct sequence, to support on-time graduation. Additionally, the Assistant Commandant for Academics will assist cadets with addressing barriers to registration, and with any justified registration changes.
The Assistant Commandant for Academics will have a high level of knowledge of Tarletonâ™s Stephenville campus resources for student wellness success such First Year Seminar, Wellness Center, Tutoring, Peer Mentorship, Writing Center, Tarleton Library, Recreation Center and programs, Financial Aid, Scholarship Office, etc., and encourage cadet maximization of these resources.
The Assistant Commandant for Academics will coordinate with the Administrative Coordinator for Leadership & Military College to ensure Corps of Cadets participant rosters are accurately maintained and will coordinate with other departments within the institution to ensure university systems accurately reflect Corps of Cadets membership.
The Assistant Commandant for Academics will demonstrate exceptional oral and written communication skills and will be familiar with the Corps of Cadets construct. Knowledge of the needs of first-generation college students is strongly preferred.
Position is located in Stephenville, Texas with work hours of Monday-Friday; from 8am to 5pm of as work requirements indicate including after-office hours and some weekends.
Job Duties
65% Oversee cadet academics
-Instruct cadets on Priority Registration preparation and procedures to maximize earliest registration opportunities.
-Schedule and supervise mandatory evening Cadet Study Hall.
-Monitor cadet grades, create academic progress reports to share with key staff, and promote cadet use of campus resources for student success. Assign cadets to Academic Watch as needed, and create tailored support plans based on the needs of individual cadets.
-Coordinate with academic Colleges within the institution to be aware of suspension hearings involving cadets. Synchronize Corps of Cadets actions with outcomes of College hearings.
-Prepare academic awards for cadets meeting Corps of Cadets program thresholds for specific awards. Schedule and coordinate an Academic Awards Ceremony at the start of Fall and Spring semesters to recognize superior academic achievement.
-Prepare and revise as needed the Form 104R degree plan for contracted Army ROTC cadets, and the Form 48-degree plan for contracted Air Force ROTC cadets. Coordinate any degree plan changes with the cadets' respective ROTC programs.
-Assist cadets with resolving schedule conflicts between required major courses and Military Science/ Aerospace Studies courses.

-Chair the Leadership & Military College Scholarship Committee to select the best-qualified applicants to recommend for cadet-centered scholarship awards.
-Coordinate with Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC to monitor incoming ROTC scholarship recipients, particularly the 3-year awardees.
-Provide instruction to cadets to encourage application to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Tarleton General Scholarship Application.
-Coordinate with the Development Office and individual donors as needed.

Education and Experience Required
The Assistant Commandant for Academics must have a minimum of a Bachelorâ™s Degree and 5 years of related experience.
The Assistant Commandant must also have at least 16 years of commissioned military experience with an 0-5 or 0-6 rank.
Preferred Education and Experience
Master's degree and at least three years of experience in a student support position in higher education.
Teaching experience at higher education level is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ideally, the Assistant Commandant for Academics will have a high level of knowledge of the Canvas
Learning Management System in order to guide cadets in using Canvas to best support their learning.

The target base annual salary is $59,370 and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
