The Middle School Learning Specialist provides supervisory and professional expertise in all areas of student support systems. They co-coordinate and co-manage, along with the Lower School and Upper School Learning Specialists, all campus resources used by students with learning differences and provide support for teachers and parents regarding students’ specific needs. The Learning Specialist is responsible for developing and supervising individual educational plans with emphasis on increasing a student’s understanding of and advocacy for their learning challenges. In close partnership with Division Directors, the Student Support Team, and other offices as appropriate, the Middle School Learning Specialist offers a student-centered approach that supports students in all areas of life at Maret.
Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in their work. The person in this position serves as an advisor to Middle School students, may teach a class depending on area of expertise, and will have one or more community responsibilities. This position is supervised by the Middle School Director.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinate, plan spaces for, and manage adult tutors via Zoom with Upper School Learning Specialist
Maintain a current list of educational testers and provide appropriate information to families needing this service
Review comprehensive psychological evaluations and generate Plans for Academic Support (PAS)
Assess students and provide/recommend appropriate support
Teach and monitor study skills curriculum integration in Grades 5-8
Collaborate with Lower School and Upper School Learning Specialists to prepare students and families for the transition to Middle and Upper School.
Observe classes in order to appraise support programs and instructional effectiveness
Assist classroom teachers in selecting, locating, and securing instructional materials and developing skills and techniques for diverse learning styles
Collaborate with the Admission Office concerning prospective students
Meet regularly with Middle School teachers and grade deans
Coordinate ERB testing, analysis, and reporting for students Grades 5-8
The successful candidate will:
Have a master’s degree in a related field (preferred)
Have experience as a teacher and as a school learning specialist
