Job Purpose
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Residence Life, the incumbent coordinates the administration and operations of a specific residence hall as well as ancillary Student Affairs functions on the Winthrop University campus located near Charlotte, North Carolina in the Metrolina area.
Job Summary
Maintains overall responsibility for 425 students; supervises 8-10 resident assistants; 25 office hosts and 10-15 night hosts: Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates student employees and assists with programming development.
Coordinates the administration and operation of a specific residence hall: Oversees hall council and development of academic living/learning communities; assists in the development and implementation of programs, policies and procedures; assists with short- and long-range planning; maintains office hours and administers a hall office as an extension of the central Residence Life office.
Plans and implements training programs and workshops for Residence Life staff; develops and promotes academic success, educational, wellness, cultural and social programs; chairs departmental committees.
Collaborates on an assigned student success project/program.
Advises staff members and students; enforces all university and Residence Life policies; and adjudicates residence hall disciplinary cases and administers sanctions.
Rotates “on call duty” and responds to personnel and building emergencies and crises on a 24-hour basis, including break periods.
Coordinates summer conference housing, summer school housing or other summer functions and projects.
Coordinates residence hall maintenance and approves and inspects room personalization requests.
Advises a residence hall council and student groups.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary
Knowledge/experience working with academic living/learning residential communities. Knowledge of policies, practices and procedures related to residence hall operations. Knowledge of interpersonal/group interaction, student development theory and counseling techniques. Ability to counsel/advise students effectively; exercise mature judgment in difficult circumstances; establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, parents and the general public; coordinate/monitor a variety of simultaneous activities; supervise/evaluate the work of others; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; deal with sensitive/confidential information/ situations; effectively teach and present information to students; and manage/coordinate teams or groups of people to achieve a common goal.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of live-in experience as a resident assistant (resident advisor), senior resident assistant, resident director or equivalent. Must be willing and able to reside in residence hall year-round and work a schedule that includes some evening and weekend hours.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in college student personnel or related field; two years of experience in housing or related college student affairs position, including experience working with academic living/learning communities; and supervisory experience.
