Job Overview
The Associate Dean of Student Affairs is primarily responsible for achieving the strategic mission of the school, which is to plan and execute recruiting and yield strategies to attract highly qualified and diverse students, identify and create innovations in curricular and co-curricular student experiences, launch and manage new programs and initiatives, and create an exceptional overall experience for McCourt students and alumni. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Coordinate the scheduling of 200+ courses a year for 150+ tenure-line, full-time non-tenure-line, and adjunct faculty; the position also oversees all adjunct faculty contracts
Oversee all career development and student support services for all McCourt degree programs and career development for McCourt alumni
Work with the Dean to set strategic priorities, develop student academic metrics, and implement policies to realize the strategic mission
Closely coordinate with the Dean, Chief of Staff, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, Senior Director of Communications, Director of Strategic Initiatives, and Senior Business Manager to achieve a thoroughly integrated McCourt experience; and manage critical relationships with the University Registrar, the Office of Global Services, Provost's Office, University Counsel, and other university offices
Supervise a staff of 14 full-time student services professionals, who together manage the curricular and co-curricular experiences of approximately 600+ full-time and part-time graduate students with the future potential of supporting an undergraduate program with up to 400 students. In particular, manage all admissions, career development, employer relations development, academic advising, monitoring of students' academic progress, coordination of course schedules and registration, co-curricular events, extra-curricular activities, and student government and club organizations.
Serve as primary liaison for the McCourt students and staff with faculty on all matters pertaining to curriculum requirements, grading policies and adjudication of the grade appeal process, exam policies and scheduling, and community standards
Work closely with faculty to ensure that common classroom, grading, and exam practices, insofar as is practicable, are followed
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to the Dean of the McCourt School, the Associate Dean has work interactions that include but are not limited to:
Hires, supervises, and develops six full-time staff members, including a team of Assistant Deans, Directors, Associate Directors, and Assistant Directors; as well as part-time Writing Tutors, Instructional Associates, Graduate Assistants, and student workers
Works closely with the Dean and other Associate Deans to establish strategy and policy as well as oversee their administration
Works with student representatives (student government officers, program liaisons) to identify ways to improve processes and experience for students
Consults with faculty members and appropriate administrators to identify curricular needs and to develop course schedules that provide appropriate offerings of both core (required) and elective courses
Counsels students experiencing academic difficulties and assist the students in securing appropriate assistance
Meets with visitors from current and potential exchange partner schools to assess the desirability of maintaining, revising, or initiating an exchange relationship
Meets with students who are (a) appealing grades; (b) seeking course substitutions to meet graduate requirements; (c) accused of non-academic misconduct (for example, striking or harassing a fellow student) and resolve most of these issues; and refers other cases to Associate Dean of Academic Affairs
Liaises with faculty concerning classroom, grading, and exam policies and procedures
Qualifications
Master's degree
At least 10 years of experience within a university setting
Supervisory experience - preference for experience with student services and academic programming
Familiarity with PC-based word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation packages (Windows environment)
Extremely strong interpersonal abilities and strong team orientation
Ability to work with various constituencies including faculty, students, and staff
Ability to think strategically regarding the delivery of programs and services
