This is a fully benefited, full-time Harvard University position that has been funded through June 30, 2026. There is the possibility of renewal, contingent on funding, university priorities and satisfactory job performance.
The Principal Software Engineer a member of a high-performing team that focuses on the development and implementation of a world-class online learning platform (LXP). The Principal Software Engineer is part of a team responsible for designing, developing, enhancing, and maintaining multiple large components of the LXP platform while establishing and optimizing industry-class software development practices and workflows. The Principal Software Engineer will strengthen and grow a culture of collaboration and openness within the team and with partners.
Participate fully in software development life cycle
Lead development of technical solutions to deliver business requirements
Participate in long term strategic planning for the application portfolio(s)
Establish and maintain internal/external stakeholder relationships
Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
Other duties as needed or required
Basic Qualifications
Minimum of seven years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills

Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
Experience with cloud platforms and technologies such as AWS and Pulumi
Experience creating and improving CICD processes and workflows
Expert knowledge in one or more web development technologies such as Node, JavaScript, TypeScript, NestJS, and Vue
Experience with one or more security and monitoring technologies such as Orca, SecurityHub, Checkmarx, Whitehat Sentinel, Splunk, LogicMonitor
Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards
Certificates and Licenses
Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred
Working Conditions
HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business needs allow. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Some presence on campus may be necessary based on needs and the nature of the work.
