The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine seeks a strategic, visionary, and effective leader to serve as the Associate Dean for Veterinary Medical Center Operations and Chief Veterinary Medical Officer (CVMO) for the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). As a national leader in veterinary medicine with a mission to advance the health of animals, people, and the environment, the School has a rich history of educating veterinarians and veterinary scientists, discovering new knowledge through a robust and progressive research enterprise, and setting the standards in animal health care through its clinical programs. Fully accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the VMTH comprises a Small Animal and Large Animal Hospital, with 40 specialty services, and is home to more than 150 veterinary specialists, 130 house officers, and 335 clinical support staff. With a caseload exceeding 75,000 annually, the VMTH has an operating budget of $80 million and serves the people of California by providing exceptional patient care, outstanding clinical training for DVM students and house officers, a robust Veterinary Center for Clinical Trials, a highly productive clinical research program supported with funding from the Centers for Companion Animal Health, Equine Health, and Food Animal Health, and provides public service programs (Center for Professional Continuing Education) of the highest quality to advance the healthcare and welfare of animals. Beyond the UC Davis campus, the School has clinical programs in Tulare and San Diego, and also manages the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory system and includes Veterinary Medicine Extension. As the School prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary, it is embarking on exciting initiatives in each of its key missions, as well as continued renovation and expansion of clinical space through construction of an expanded Veterinary Medical Center. Reporting directly to the Dean and serving on the senior leadership team, the CVMO plays a vital role in the School's continued growth, innovation, collaboration, and outreach, and the exceptional quality of its clinical enterprise.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and Administration: Working with the Dean, VMTH Directors, and Hospital Administrator, lead and administratively ensure the quality, fiscal integrity, and operational efficiency of the clinical enterprise with outcomes aligned with the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) strategic plan; shared responsibility for the development and stewardship of resources to support the VMC's continuing evolution as a premier academic veterinary health center; working with the Dean, champion and cultivate a culture of inclusion in support of diversity that embraces the UC Davis Principles of Community.
Fiscal Responsibility: Work directly with the Dean, Executive Assistant Dean, and Hospital Administrator to allocate resources in support of clinical training, patient care, and clinical research aligned with the mission and VMC strategic plan. This includes management of the state allocation for the clinical teaching program; to support, sustain, and develop contemporary clinical experiential training and educational programs to prepare entry level veterinarians for clinical practice; and evaluate and make recommendations for cost saving measures, program efficiencies, and opportunities for revenue streams in support of the clinical programs.
Clinical Education: Responsible for ensuring a robust clinical experiential education program in a nurturing learning environment, including provision of adequate small and large animal primary care experiences to support entry level training of professional (DVM) students to meet American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education accreditation standards, and to provide appropriate clinical material and resources to support academically rigorous graduate clinical training programs including the world's largest postgraduate veterinary clinical training program (interns, residents, fellows).
Client and Patient Services: Ensure sufficient personnel to meet the mission of the clinical enterprise, provide outstanding compassionate patient care, and to support the clinical teaching programs while meeting the standards for accreditation by the AAHA reflecting quality and excellence of clinical programs.
Academic Personnel Management: In consultation with the School's academic leadership, develop and oversee a clinical faculty recruitment and retention plan to advance the academic and clinical reputation of the VMTH. Provide achievement recognition and performance evaluations of clinical faculty for career advancement.
Facilities, Equipment, Safety, and Security: In conjunction with School leadership, responsible for the continued maintenance and improvement of the physical plant and acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment to support the clinical enterprise and training of DVM students and house officers. Prioritize funding for equipment purchases and facility renovations; and work with the School's Development Office to cultivate philanthropic support to provide a sound financial base for the VMTH operations and clinical programs.
Outreach: Ensure a robust media presence that showcases the clinical programs of the VMTH, provide quality continuing professional education programs and outreach that promote the VMTH to enhance its referral and client base, and monitor the veterinary profession's needs.
