This position works a hybrid remote format (schedule to be to be determined), which requires a telecommuting agreement and adherence to the UCSC Telecommuting/Remote Work Guidelines. The employee shall be available in a full-time capacity during assigned telecommuting work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor). DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The History of Art and Visual Culture (HAVC) Department at UC Santa Cruz offers a bachelor of arts and a minor; the Curation, Heritage and Museum Concentration; and a Ph.D. in Visual Studies. The department consists of 12 ladder-rank faculty and lecturers. Students study the production, use, form, and reception of visual products and cultural manifestations past and present. Objects of study include paintings, sculptures, and architecture, which are within the purview of art history, as well as art and non-art objects and visual expressions that sit beyond disciplinary boundaries. The department offers courses covering a wide variety of materials from the cultures of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific Islands, including media as diverse as ritual, performative expression, bodily adornment, landscape, the built environment, installation art, textiles, manuscripts, books, photography, form, video games, apps, websites, and data visualizations.
Under the general direction of the department chair, the department manager is responsible for department planning and program support, curriculum management, financial management, equipment, facilities and space coordination and security, staff and academic human resources, development and public information, and oversight of the graduate and undergraduate programs.

JOB DUTIES
60% - Department Planning, Administration, and Program Support
Manages, plans, and administers a full range of administrative operations to support the academic department. Administrative operations include budget and fiscal activities, staff and academic personnel, student services, space, facilities and equipment, and program and curricular implementation. Provides expert advice and support to the chair in the development of long-range and strategic plans for the operations listed above. Using advanced knowledge, prepares short and long-range planning for administrative services operations and improvements to processes. Performs administrative operations activities as predominant focus of position, with accountability for operational and budget processes, staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning. Represents the department on business issues to the University community and serves on committees.
25% - Curricular Planning
Participates in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for departmental operations. Facilitates delivery of instruction for the department, working closely with the chair, undergraduate advisor and graduate coordinator; analyzes resource implications and establishes funding priorities based on analysis of data. Serves as contact for department in curricular matters, ensures curricular coordination between various divisional departments and other academic departments as appropriate and assists in resolving issues and conflicts. Monitors enrollment levels and recommends changes in course offerings, instructor assignments and resource needs. Oversees the hiring of TAs and readers for each quarter. Oversees the development and implementation of graduate and undergraduate program policies, including graduate admissions.
Oversees the editing and updating of the department's information in various publications, including web presence and other graduate program publications.
15% - Supervision
Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the effective and efficient operation of departmental functions. Recommends hiring of new employees, transfers, promotions, salary actions, terminations, performance management and budget recommendations. Manages daily activities of administrative staff; sets priorities and deadlines for completion of tasks; establishes internal procedures and effective utilization of resources. Serves as a resource for faculty and researchers who hire staff and non-academic student employees.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Solid interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising, and counseling to effectively motivate others.
Demonstrated leadership experience with ability to effectively manage change, resolve complex problems independently and/or in consultation with others.
Solid customer service skills.
Excellent organizational, planning and analytical skills with ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, prioritize workloads, anticipate needs, oversee and participate in projects, and function independently to meet deadlines, often with frequent interruptions.
Excellent writing skills and ability to communicate complex material in written and oral formats.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of UC academic and staff personnel policies and procedures.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
