Work Conditions: Work is primarily indoor and sedentary in nature.

Duties of Position: Assists students with successful completion outcomes by providing proactive outreach, mentoring, and intervention using a variety of communication methods. Helps students remove barriers to completion, serving as a resource expert for students to connect them to the appropriate service or department, and collaborating with faculty and advising personnel to identify strategies for assisting students and coordinating the appropriate support. Develops meaningful rapport with assigned participants and provides individualized coaching and ongoing feedback via phone, email, text message, and in-person appointments.

Conducts initial assessments to assist student participants in assessing their current skills and support service needs and interprets assessment results for appropriate pathway placement and referrals.

Advises students on targeted career and educational pathways, including appropriate pathway entry points for participants; explains stackable career pathways.

Assists students in accessing training that leads to the attainment of industry-recognized credentials, certificates, and degrees through SCC3 comprehensive career pathways.

Collaborates with SCC3 project staff to develop opportunities for students to gain real-world information and exposure to targeted career pathways.

Forms strong relationships with project partners to ensure accurate and timely referrals; in collaboration with project partners, determines metrics and manages data for evaluation of the participant referral system.

Responsible for case management of assigned students to proactively monitor their progress toward completing educational goals; monitors students’ personal academic plans and progress as determined by the student’s Academic Advisor.

Engages students who may be at-risk or moderate risk, underserved, low-income, first-generation, and/or other underrepresented populations and provides support based on each student’s individually assessed needs.

Conducts proactive outreach and monitors assigned students’ progress toward completing their educational goals and meeting program participant expectations, including attending required advising/coaching sessions.

Assesses student basic needs and connects participants to existing college resources; identifies resources to enhance both academic success and personal development (i.e., Tutoring Center, Math Lab, Writing Center, etc.).

Develops and conducts workshops and events designed to assist students and their families with orientation, career exploration resources, academic planning, and use of support services; refers students to the appropriate support services provided by Harper and serves as a conduit to refer participants to project community partners and other community-based programs.

Works collaboratively with supervisor and partners to identify additional resources to support the development of program-specific career pathways.

Evaluates, documents, and reports on student academic participation and progress.

Stays current with training and professional development related to academic advising, student success/retention, multicultural competencies. and related topics.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree required in education, human services, counseling, or related area.

Experience Requirements: Minimum three years of increasingly responsible experience in career counseling, human services, and academic advising in higher education or related field.

Strong interpersonal, analytical, planning, and organizational skills with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment are required. Must have excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication abilities. Strong networking, outreach, and team-building skills. Knowledge of career planning and employment search processes, tools, and resources or professional development equivalent. Experience in counseling, coaching, or advising in group sessions. Able to independently organize and prioritize work and meet critical deadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and Teams. Familiarity with a variety of technology tools, such as student information systems, appointment schedulers, degree audit planners, and CRMs.
