Position Description

The University of Washington invites applications for a full-time position of Associate Dean Gallagher Law Library and Information Systems. The Gallagher Law Library is one of the largest law libraries west of the Mississippi and has a vital Law Librarianship program. The Associate Dean supports the research and teaching missions of the school. The Gallagher Law Library provides law students with the ideal environment to nurture their legal education and offers first-class support for academic research and scholarship.

The Associate Dean will hold a faculty position at the level of a Teaching Professor. Teaching Professor at the University of Washington is on a non-tenure eligible track. Faculty teaching and decanal administrative duties are negotiable based on interest and experience.

The Associate Dean will work with school leadership, librarians, and law staff to align strategic priorities of the law library with the school priorities. They will create a forward-looking vision for the library and implement strategic priorities and vision. The Associate Dean will utilize social media and online education to support the law school's program of legal education. This role will maintain all financial, operations and contractual duties for the library. In addition, the Associate Dean manages the Information Technology group for the school.

The Associate Dean will work closely with the Dean, the administration, faculty members, and library staff to develop and implement comprehensive library services that support scholarly research and the law curriculum, including the teaching of legal research. Duties will also include the following:

• Work with leadership and law librarians to implement strategic priorities of the law library
• Prioritization of needs and services to best serve our community
• Address cultural and moral challenges
• Conduct and create a sustainable workforce plan and strategy
• Day-to-day management of the librarians, including setting appropriate goals and performance metrics, and working with Academic Human Resources and Human Resources to adhere/ update law librarian personnel code
• Maintain financial, operational, and contractual duties held by the Associate Dean
• Oversee the School of Law Technology Services team and assist with the modernization of instructional technology
• Conduct tech needs assessment and prioritize tech modernization and systems development
• Work in collaboration with the UW iSchool on the Law Librarianship program
• Will be expected to keep current on the latest trends in library management and technology, and translate those trends into a coherent long-term strategic plan for the library

This is a 9-month faculty appointment. The base salary range for this position will be $13,000 - $15,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. The administrative appointment includes additional compensation and may include service during part of the summer. The anticipated start date is September 2023. All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Qualifications

• A J.D and a graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree, or foreign equivalent.
• A minimum of three years of experience in law library administration, including experience with budget and personnel matters.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and collegial team environment.
• Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills.
• Demonstrated understanding of the research, teaching, and educational needs of a highly productive faculty and diverse student body.
