GCE Lab School prepares high school students for success as citizens in our interconnected and multicultural world. Our model integrates subjects into thematic courses that invite students to investigate real-world questions in a collaborative, project-based learning environment. Classroom learning is augmented by weekly Field Experiences that engage students in the relevance of their academics, get them outside the classroom and connect them with their community, and ignite their curiosity about potential career paths.
The School Counselor will provide direct support and guidance to individual students regarding individual mental health and wellbeing and will consult with teachers, parents, and administrators regarding the social and emotional needs of students in grades 9 through 12. The Counselor will help to cultivate a healthy, safe, inclusive culture for all students.
Provide individual counseling to students with identified concerns and needs
Identify at-risk students and implement interventions to enhance success
Work with faculty to promote a positive emotional and academic climate in the school
Develop and establish mental health protocols and procedures
Serve on the Student Wellness Team
Communicate with families to address student issues as appropriate
Make referrals to and consult with external resources for long-term or urgent care
Respond to crises as needed
Provide family education sessions on SEL-related topics
Possible: provide classroom instruction on topics in Health and Wellness, including mental health, healthy relationships, substance use and abuse, and sexual health.
Summary of Qualifications and Expectations
BA required; clinical license required (LCSW, LPCC, LMHC, or similar)
Experience with students ages 14-18 in an academic setting
Independent school experience preferred
Experience working in multicultural and multi-ethnic environments
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
Established interest in progressive education
Living abroad/travel experiences preferred
Time & Place
This is a full-time, 10-month position following GCE’s annual and weekly calendar. Position begins no later than August 1, 2023. It is possible that for 2023-24, this role could alternatively be a part-time or three-quarters time role.
