DESCRIPTION
With over 80 full-time faculty, the UCSD Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) provides care for nearly 120,000 patients annually at 3 Emergency Departments - level 1 trauma center, NIH Cancer Center, and rural critical access hospital. The Department has robust programs in education, clinical training, and research.
One of the areas of research emerging in the DEM is telemedicine. Telemedicine and other new technologies are being implemented as an innovative, cost-effective means to deliver healthcare to specific populations for whom it may be problematic or cost prohibitive to access care within a traditional healthcare system. Addressing the urgent and emergent healthcare needs of individuals in an assisted living facility represent such a challenge. These seniors often develop medical complaints that require attention from healthcare personnel either on site or through transporting the individual to local hospital Emergency Departments, resulting in a potential high cost of care.
The DEM is collaborating with the West Health Institute and several local senior living centers to develop, test, and implement telehealth services with the following resources:
24/7 availability of Emergency Physician (i.e., Urgent care).
Weekly clinic with Geriatrician.
Weekly clinic with Geriatric Psychiatrist.
Weekly clinic with Geriatric Pharmacist.
The goal of this initiative is to reduce the number of unnecessary transfers to the ED and improve clinical outcomes for residents through access to both urgent and primary or specialty telehealth services.
