Earl Warren College is one of the Undergraduate Colleges at the University of California, San Diego. Warren College is home to approximately 5,600 undergraduate students who may select any major offered by the university. The colleges are distinguished by their general education curriculum which at Warren encourages both depth and breadth, stresses the relationship between the individual and society, and includes two quarters of writing and ethics for most students. The staff provide programs and services that support the academic mission of the University by enhancing the educational, personal, cultural, and social development of students.
Under the supervision of the Warren College Dean of Student Affairs, the Sr. New Student Programs Specialist is responsible for developing and coordinating Warren College's new student/transfer/family orientations and transitional programs; serves as the College's lead staff member for yield events; engages in programmatic efforts to support the unique needs of entering first-year and transfer students; advises hires, trains, motivates, and supervises Orientation student staff. The Sr. New Student Programs Specialist works closely with the Warren Student Affairs team to plan, create, promote and develop initiatives that enhance the college experience while meeting the needs of a diverse student population. The incumbent will be charged with creating initiatives with a focus in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). As an active member of the Student Affairs team, the Sr. New Student Programs Specialist will attend staff meetings and training sessions, as well as coordinate and support College involvement in campus-wide events (including, but not limited to, Triton Days, Family Weekend, Alumni Weekend, and College Night). This position works closely with a variety of college staff including but not limited to the Provost's Office, Residential Life, Academic Advising, and the Warren Writing program. The incumbent will represent Warren College at weekly meetings of the Campus Wide Orientation Council (CWOC) and at assigned Undergraduate Colleges program initiatives. This position will advise the Warren Honors Council and assist in the advisement of other student leadership organizations at Warren College. This position will be responsible to research, analyze, and develop strategies to engage the Warren College community through social media platforms; elevate and strengthen the Warren College brand in the social media environment. Seasonal evening and weekend hours as required by yield, orientation, transition, and retention programs.
Work Schedule: 40 hours per week with flexible schedule: seasonal evenings and weekend hours as required by yield, orientation, and retention programs. Specifically expected to work at Triton Days, Family Weekend, Welcome Week, Orientation programs, and Commencement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization. Knowledge of best practices and trends in Orientation, New Student Programs, and Transition Programming.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Demonstrated experience interacting in sensitive situations with individuals and groups from a wide range of academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge and skill in making sound independent judgment, addressing student concerns, and working with colleagues to provide needed referrals, resources, and outreach.
Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills. Demonstrated experience in program development/event planning, implementation, and assessment intended to meet the needs of target populations; with the additional ability to organize and conduct meetings, panel discussions, programs and workshops.
Demonstrated commitment in creating equitable and inclusive environments for students from underrepresented populations. Demonstrated interpersonal, group, cross-cultural communication, and leadership skills. The ability to lead and to promote leadership among diverse student populations, and to facilitate effective group activities.
