Job Summary
Under direction of the Director of Advising and Policy (DAP), the Assistant Director of Advising and Policy is charged with the following:
overseeing academic advising in the Engineering Undergraduate Office (EUO) and coordinating advising services for the College of Engineering (COE) in collaboration with the department-based (program) academic advisors.
assisting the DAP with researching, recommending, implementing, and assessing advising best practices for the college;
coordinating retention activities with the Director of Undergraduate Retention Programs;
In the absence of the DAP, the Assistant Director assumes responsibility and authority for the effective delivery of EUO services, as delegated by the DAP or by the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies.
RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN FOR APPLICATIONS RECEIVED BY 3/16/2023. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sitting at a desk with a computer for several hours at a time.
Stopping to reach and retrieve physical files from file shelves at floor level or above.
Maneuvering/lifting materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Occasionally working outside the standard Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm schedule, including evenings and weekends, and varied lunch hours to meet operational needs.
Required to work at the College of Engineering commencement, as may be needed, and at the campus orientation event.
Working in an area with constant interruption and noise from office machines, telephones and conversations.
Traveling to locations off-campus and occasionally staying overnight.
Limited vacation during orientation, commencement, and other major student events.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Possessing a valid California driver's license; providing own transportation for frequent work-related travel.
Master's degree in STEM field, academic advising, counseling, higher education leadership, student services, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Excellent supervisory skills as evidenced through experience with training, direct supervision and evaluation of staff.
A minimum of 3 years of experience as an academic advisor in an accredited higher-education setting, including experience with general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, units, prerequisites, majors and minors).
Management, leadership and negotiation skills to motivate effective team interaction and collaboration and to model good professional behavior and communication skills among individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Knowledge of the academic environment and pressures encountered by students at a major research university, including students from under-represented groups and from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and international students.
Skill to identify and implement solutions for advising needs to the maximum extent possible within given staffing, space and budgetary limitations. Interpersonal skills to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with administration, staff, visitors, and volunteers, using diplomacy, and good judgment during all interactions in the performance of wide variety of programs and support functions in a diverse and inclusive environment.
Preferred:
A minimum of 5 years of experience as an academic advisor in an accredited higher-education setting, including experience with general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, units, prerequisites, majors and minors).
Experience using decision-making skills to extract from complex situations those elements of greatest relevance and present that information succinctly and recognizing problems requiring specialized professional attention to make well-chosen referrals.
Demonstrated experience using analytical and problem solving skills to identify and document patterns of student academic needs and to develop strategies and programs to successfully meet those needs.
Experience using counseling and guidance techniques to provide comprehensive advising or counseling services, and to provide guidance to students and parents in distress.
