Alumni Relations & Development (ARD) engages alumni (~190k), current students, parents and friends of the University through intellectual, professional and social activities on campus, around the world and online. ARD raises $600 Million annually to support faculty and researchers, practitioners and patients, and students and programs across the University. Our work supports priorities in every division, school, department, and institute.
The ARD team of the Physical Sciences Division (PSD) serves as part of the Sciences and Organizations fundraising team at the University of Chicago. Tasked with increasing alumni engagement and raising support for the Deanâ™s priorities in the PSD, as well as supporting departmental needs for Astronomy & Astrophysics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geophysical Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics, as well as for the Data Science Institute. The team engages in alumni relations activities; manages a portfolio of donors and prospects for  the Division; and works with colleagues across ARD to broaden the exposure of the PSD to the alumni and friends of the University of Chicago.
The Temporary Director of Development, Physical Sciences Division manages a team of professional staff responsible for programs designed to meet University fundraising goals for contributed income. Manages relationships with alumni, faculty, administrators and organizations with potential to make gifts in support of the University. Develops communication strategies for projects and contributes to the development of larger advancement strategies.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Development, Sciences & Organizations, the interim Director of Development (DOD) is responsible for leading all activity related to seeking philanthropic support for PSD for a period of up to 26 weeks while the incumbent DOD is on leave. Â The DOD will staff and serve as lead advisor to the Dean in developing fundraising plans and cases for support for division priorities, and in effectively working with faculty and institutional leaders to advance priorities, execute advancement plans, and meet fundraising goals during the interim period.
Responsibilities:
In partnership with the PSD ARD team, supports ongoing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans tailored to specific donors and prospects, and manages or assists in gift solicitations.
Provides a high level of partnership to the Dean, including strategically prioritizing the Dean's donor and prospective donor portfolio.
Develops case statements, talking points, proposals, and briefing materials for fundraising activities; ensures deadlines are met; monitors, analyzes and reports on overall results to internal and external constituencies.
Works closely and collaboratively with gift officers University-wide in principal gifts, regional major gifts, gift planning, annual fund, foundation and corporate relations to monitor and facilitate growth of the PSD prospect pool, and to contribute to strategy and solicitation plans for multiple-interest prospects that incorporate PSD priorities.
Assists gift officers University-wide in understanding PSD priorities and opportunities. Work collaboratively with PSD staff.
Serves as the day-to-day supervisor for a team of employees, in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Development, Sciences & Organizations.
Assists in coordination and staffing of events in partnership with PSD development team.
Implements fundraising program and activities.
May recruit staff volunteers and provide leadership and evaluation to staff members.
Performs other related work as needed.
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Education:
Bachelorâ™s degree required.
Experience:
Experience in science, development, alumni relations, donor relations, nonprofit management, research, marketing, public relations, sales or similar professional work experience, required.
Experience leading a project team or managing staff, required.
Experience working closely and collaboratively with senior leadership, trustees and board members, required.
Demonstrated experience in solicitations and cultivation of prospective donors, or sales and client development, required.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University's Donor Relationship Management System), Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
Demonstrated effective decision-making, while working autonomously and exercising good judgement.
Demonstrated ability to work in a matrixed organization and identify and utilize resources efficiently and effectively.
Superior communications skillsâ”oral, written, and listeningâ”and executive presence and confidence to represent PSD in various forums.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to relate well to individuals at every level of an organization both internally and externally.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Standard office environment.
Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business.
Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
