 The Art & Design College Accelerator Program is a grant funded 3-year program designed to widen the pathway towards higher education for Baltimore’s underserved youth of diverse backgrounds with aspirations to attend a four-year undergraduate program in art and design. Twelve to fifteen students will be selected as members of this cohort in their 10th grade year with commitment to participate through their senior year. Additional cohorts are anticipated in following years. MICA offers this program on campus. 

Over the course of 3 years, participants in the Art & Design College Accelerator Program will: 

• Complete 7 portfolio preparation courses through MICA’s Young People’s Studios.

• Participate in an ongoing Fall/Spring workshop series designed to expose students to a variety of art making and design techniques as well as provide holistic support. 

• Have access to an academic tutor throughout the school year. 

• Receive transportation assistance, lunch, and art supplies for days the program meets. 

• Participate in the Pre-College Art & Design Residency Program, earning 3 college credits. 

• Build a college admissions portfolio and compete for MICA freshman scholarships. 

• Develop interpersonal skills in leadership, critique and mentorship development. 

• Engage with a MICA college admissions counselor for mock interviews and feedback.

• Experience the life of a college student in art and design.

• Gain insight into the art and design professions. 

• Learn from professional artists and designers and other students in the College. 

• Demonstrate a capacity for college-level rigor. 

Essential​ ​Duties​ ​&​ ​Responsibilities: 

This position reports to the Director of Youth Programs and coordinates and manages the Art & Design College Access Program. For 2023-2024 the program will meet on Saturdays 9:30am-3:30pm over the course of 8 sessions in the fall semester, 10 sessions in the spring, and for two weeks M-F during the summer. The Coordinator is expected to be on campus during lunch and workshop/tutoring sessions, and maintain a direct relationship with students and their families. 

Advise students, families, and prospective participants regarding program and curriculum goals. 

• Manage student information. 

• Acts as an ambassador for the program when appropriate. 

• Maintain an open line of communication and support for students and their families. 

• Communicate with Director of Youth Programs regarding student progress and needs. 

• Share information about resources and events on campus as related to art/design. 

Prepare courses and scheduling 

• Recruit and select new prospective workshop faculty and tutors. 

• Collaborate with workshop faculty to create a syllabus each semester. 

• Create/update programming as needed, including course descriptions for publication. 

• Collaborate with the YPS Area Coordinator to ensure course offerings and enrollment spaces in YPS HS Portfolio Prep courses each semester. 

• Maintain an archive of program curricula and sample student works. 

• Collaborate with the Pre-College Coordinator as necessary for student participation in the program.

• Facilitate inclusive community focused lunch discussions with students. 

• Provide 1 on 1 mentoring to students.

Manage faculty and staff

• Train, supervise, mentor and support workshop faculty and academic tutors as needed. 

• Communicate with Director of Youth Programs regarding staff progress and needs. 

Manage program equipment and supplies 

• Research, prepare and submit supply orders for workshop classes as necessary. 

• Coordinate distribution of lunch as necessary for program participants. 

• Coordinate distribution of transportation passes as necessary for program participants. 

Programming 

• Implement all programming and procedures with staff for opening and closing of each semester session. 

• In conjunction with the OS registration staff, verify enrollment and receipt of necessary student data. 

• Coordinate events and exhibitions as needed with support from the Open Studies office.
