Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, the Assistant Dean, Development oversees Annual Giving and Major Gifts for Columbia Business School.  These two programs identify, cultivate, and solicit the Columbia Business School???s 50,000 alumni who are global leaders in finance, management, consulting, technology, and other industries.  The Assistant Dean has three direct reports, the leaders of the Major Gifts, Annual Giving, and Marketing and Participation teams.  The groups work with alumni throughout their alumni careers, starting with students working on class giving, young alumni, those celebrating reunions, those making leadership gifts, and those making major contributions to Columbia Business School. The Assistant Dean is a talented manager who empowers the team to do their best work.

Responsibilities

1. Hire, train, and manage talented leaders for Major Gifts, Annual Giving, and Marketing and Participation.  Provide ambitious and achievable goals, coach and develop team members, and work with team leaders to provide an empowering and accountable culture for team members.
2. Create a team culture that supports growth and leadership for the team members.
3. Work closely with partners in Research, Stewardship, Advancement Services, Special Projects, and Alumni Relations to create a positive experience for alumni and donors.
4. Collaborate across the School to understand the most pressing needs and opportunities.  Partner with academic and administrative leadership. 
5. Collaborate across the University to ensure that the team is able to partner with other schools and units to help donors achieve their philanthropic goals.  
6. Ensure that work in these areas is being done at the highest level of practice, keep current on best practices across higher education and the NYC nonprofit landscape.
7. Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor???s degree required. Minimum 7-9 years related experience required, preferably with 7 years of development experience, including five + years managing multiple teams/functions.

Must have experience in major gifts and annual fund.  Ability to present complex information and Columbia's mission in a clear and compelling manner. Excellent written, communication, and relationship building skills required. Strong personal work ethic and personal integrity. Flexibility and the demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, juggling numerous projects simultaneously is essential. Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills. Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot, in addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment. Demonstrated ability to effectively partner with a diverse group of administrators and academic leaders. High computer proficiency and the ability to create/read Excel spreadsheets are all a must.

Preferred Qualifications

Higher Education experience preferred.
