Job Description
An enthusiastic and talented educator, the Senior School English Teacher is responsible for teaching and inspiring students in grades 9 - 12 to develop a deep appreciation for the power of ideas and language. At every level, this educator invites students into the joys and responsibilities of reading, writing, speaking, and thinking as they develop strong and powerful communication skills. This skilled teacher fosters positive relationships among parents, students, and fellow teachers and dedicates themselves to our core principles of character, educational vigor, diversity, and community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and facilitate meaningful, rigorous, level-appropriate instruction to students
Cultivate the skills of effective communication in writing, listening, and multi-modal forms
Collaborate with English Department members to enhance and create a variety of core and elective courses that challenge and inspire students to think independently, creatively, and critically
Teach a variety of English courses at the High School level, including English Language and Literature, World Literature, American Literature, creative and technical writing, research-based writing, advanced grammar, and figurative language
Mentor and support students as they strive to become stronger readers, writers, and critical thinkers who are well prepared to take on the challenges of college-level courses
Serve as an advisor to a group of eight to ten students, supporting and encouraging their personal and academic growth
Embrace the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and continually evaluate curriculum and pedagogy to reflect this commitment
Demonstrate a desire for constant professional and personal growth by regularly participating in and seeking out professional learning opportunities
Promote school life by sponsoring student clubs and activities and serving on academic committees
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in English, Rhetoric & Composition, Comparative Literature, or related field is required: Master’s degree is preferred
Minimum of three years of secondary school English teaching experience
Strong background in and knowledge of both traditional authors of English and World Literature as well as contemporary authors and texts
Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills
Proven success working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, parents, and school leaders
