Job Overview
Lead the design, development, support, maintenance, monitoring, and implementation of the university's enterprise data, voice, and wireless networks serving as a subject matter expert in at least one critical technology area. Provide final escalation incident support, fulfill advanced customer requests in their subject area, research new technologies, develop solutions for network expansion and growth, lead the deployment of network hardware and configuration as part of the department's ongoing initiatives, and work with management to form strategies for the introduction of new and improved technologies.
Essential Functions
Lead the design, development, and provide final escalation support for networking technology, including LAN/WAN (wired switches and routers), WLAN (wireless access points and controllers), network security (VPN, firewalls, and authentication systems), network support (DNS/DHCP, network management), and telephony (VoIP) services; specific duties will vary according to the life cycle and the technical complexity of the network and associated hardware and software.
System Owner/Subject Matter Expert for one of the Network Operations department's major systems: LAN/WAN, Wireless, Voice, Security.
Plan, design, configure, maintain, and manage enterprise network devices, traveling throughout the university's campuses and to other remote facilities as necessary.
Serve as internal project manager for small to medium scale implementation projects.
Monitor and analyze network activity to ensure optimal network usage, and performance; establish and operate network test facilities; test and evaluate network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.
Evaluate and select new technologies to optimize network capacity, efficiency, and performance.
Facilitate work with clients, technical staff, and vendors on service request fulfillment, network implementation, optimization, and ongoing management.
Troubleshoot system failures escalating to vendors as appropriate; act as final level of escalation for incident reports and works with Network Operations team members and other departments to resolve problems.
Essential Functions Continued
Participate in an after-hours Tier 3 on-call rotation responding to network outage emergencies as defined in the department's standard operating procedures; serve as the emergency escalation contact for Tier 2 support.
Create and maintain a disaster recovery and backup & restore plan for vital network components, implementing when necessary.
Perform backups of network equipment configurations and support system data.
Ensure the security of the university's network by implementing the policies and practices that prevent and monitor unauthorized access, misuse, or denial of service to a computer or other network-accessible resources.
Develop and maintain documentation for network systems to be used by other engineers or the university community.
Serve as seasoned and highly proficient professional, technical mentor and advisor to the entire Network Operations team.
Serve as an expert resource to others outside of Network Operations while serving on committees and project teams.
May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.)

Required Education
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or another related program.
Eight (8) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Required Trainings/Certifications
Valid Driver's License with an acceptable record
Required Experience
Four (4) years of advanced level experience working with networking hardware and software including network design and implementation.
Possess an expert-level understanding of commonly used networking concepts, practices, and procedures.
Additional Qualifications Considered
Professional level (CCNP, CWNP) or higher industry certification.
Master's Degree and two (2) years of advanced level experience working with networking hardware and software including network design and implementation.
6-8 years working in the Cisco wireless area.
