General Statement of Duties
Under the general direction of the Director of the Health Careers Opportunity Program, the HCOP Academic Counselor serves an integral role in the HCOP team. This counselor is responsible for teaching a healthcare career discernment course as well as providing support/assistance for HCOP participants at MWCC and our partner high schools. This support includes all phases of the enrollment life cycle from point of initial advising (post-admission) through completion (college graduation) by providing academic advising services to students in person, and via college resources such as phone, email, text, and video chat, as scheduled or as walk-in meetings. Performs related work as directed.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary point of contact for a cohort of HCOP students. As the point of contact, HCOP Academic Counselor will assist program participants directly in the transition to college and overcome academic and life obstacles/challenges.
- Support students in their understanding of Blackboard, course delivery and modality, faculty expectations, time management, academic support, financial aid, course registration, etc.
- Use the developmental advising/mentoring/coaching approach and employ proactive, sustained, and strengths-based strategies to ensure the success of students enrolled in the program designed to increase persistence through completion and/or transfer.
- Perform new, transfer, and readmitted student intake advising and assist students with educational planning including, but not limited to: academic, career, and transfer resources of the College.
- Work closely with MWCC advising teams to serve students.
- Create an academic success plan for each student, schedule regular meetings to track academic progress, and ensure access to support services.
- Collaborate with campus and community-based resources to provide responsive wrap-around services for students.
- Establish meaningful relationships with students focused on academic and personal success (inside and outside of the classroom) while creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student feels they have an opportunity to set and reach their individual goals.
- Deliver HEA 106 Exploring Health Careers: Charting a Plan for Success to include coordinating any healthcare trainings, guest speakers, and off-site or virtual field trips/experiential learning opportunities; in collaboration with the IDSH Chair. Collaborate with MWCC IDSH Chair to keep HEA 106 current, and to monitor health career professions for changes to the career fields or the MWCC academic programs. Collaborate with MWCC Office of Learning, Design & Technology to identify new online platforms that offer virtual trainings/education for health careers, as well as best practices for teaching/learning to assure student acquisition of knowledge.
- Create, implement, and facilitate/lead (and/or encourage attendance in) workshops/programs/events for the HCOP cohort on a variety of topics that cultivate academic self-confidence, community engagement, 21st century life skills, and self-advocacy. This includes, but is not limited to topics that impact healthcare providers/patients such as professionalism, ethical behaviors, and telehealth etiquette.
- Identify student risk factors and appropriate interventions with an emphasis on student strengths, retention, and persistence. This includes, but is not limited to, assisting students in obtaining tutorial assistance with a Learning Consultant, or assisting students to alert faculty when they are experiencing academic difficulties.
- Address and diffuse situations of conflict and crisis while making appropriate referrals. Collaborate with other departments to ensue minimal disruption to student success.
- Participates in enrollment/recruiting events at MWCC (such as Enrollment Express, Accepted Student Registration Days, STEM Awareness Day and Open House), and at partner high schools in collaboration with MWCC ECA staff to identify students eligible for the program. This may include participation in orientation programs at MWCC and associated high schools.
- Participates in data collection efforts needed for grant reporting requirements; as directed by the HCOP Director and/or Data Manager/Evaluator.
- Maintains and updates student records in MWCC utilized platforms, such as Advisor Link/Banner.
- Performs related duties as directed.
- Travel to other MWCC campuses is required.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field;
- Three (3) years experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Travel is required to other MWCC campuses.

Additional Information:
Salary: $58,320.00-$99,407.00**
** Actual Salary determined by education, experience, and any applicable grant limitations per the collective bargaining agreement. Applicants should be aware it is unlikely the salary will be at or near the top of the range.
