POSITION SUMMARYUnder the general supervision of the Associate Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director of Residential Life for Community Standards (ADRLCS) will promote student success and accountability by bringing resolution to potential violations of California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) student conduct policies and Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) community standards. The ADRLCS promotes education of residential students on community standards, enforces University policies within residential communities, and develops appropriate sanctions to encourage transformative experiences. The Assistant Director of Residential Life will be charged with the oversight of one-third of our residential areas spanning across five communities which may encompass traditional residence halls, suite-style living, and/or apartments. This position is responsible for providing administrative and management support to the Associate Director of Residential Life and to support the Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) mission, vision, and values. The primary areas of responsibility are leadership and staff supervision, community standards adjudication, data reporting and analysis, and community standards training and education.
Examples of Duties
Leadership and Supervision:
Directly supervise, train, develop, and evaluate full-time live-in professional staff members spanning across five residential areas housing up to 3,600 students (as of 2023).
Train professional and student staff (Resident Advisors and Student Assistants) on crisis response, duty protocols, and reporting expectations.
Provide oversight to the supervision of student staff positions such as, but not limited to, Resident Advisors (RAs), and Student Assistants (SAs) spanning across 14 on-campus housing buildings as well as an apartment complex providing over 400+ apartments in East Campus.
Serve as a member of the Leadership Team for the department and assist in critical decisions that impact residential students.
Oversight of duty log creation, tracking, and expectations for the department.
Serve in the Administrator On Call emergency crisis response rotation for SHRL.
Assist with emergency, crisis preparedness and response efforts.
Approve and evaluate all financial expenditures in assigned areas for program budgets and oversight of area program budget. Approve and review all professional development fund submittals from direct reports,
Facilitate and assist in the resolution of escalating and/or high-level staff and student concerns and emergencies which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.
Assist with the ongoing growth and development of multifaceted program development which may include, but is not limited to, Living Learning Communities (LLC), Academic Initiatives, First Year Housing programs, transfer experience, athletics, international programs, graduate housing, and family housing.
Community Standards Adjudicator:
Serves as the primary residential student community standards adjudicator for potential violations of any residential community standards and/or other campus policy violations occurring in and in close proximity to student housing.
Reviews all incident reports (IRs), routes appropriately, and facilitates timely and appropriate resolution of community standards issues.
Reviews, investigates, and adjudicates potential violations of community standards and other campus policies with consultation from the University Student Conduct Administrator and/or Associate Director of Residential Life when needed.
Serves as a member of the Residential Life (RL) team and attends Residential Life weekly meetings, training, etc.
Maintains upkeep and destruction of residential community standards files on all cases per Clery guidelines. Serves on the campus Clery Compliance Team.
Imposes and tracks sanctions and follow-up actions, and prepares community standards reports related to violation statistics semester, annually, and as needed.
Understands and schedules training for department members on Federal, State, and local laws, the University Student Code of Conduct, SHRL community standards, and general policies and procedures applicable in residential community living. The ADRLCS is responsible for interpreting and explaining University and SHRL philosophies, policies, standards, expectations, regulations, and the developmental/educational goals of the conduct process to students, staff, residents, parents/guardians, and members of the campus community when necessary.
Maintains and implements community standards process management utilizing best practices and research within the field.
Provides all relevant information, mentorship, and assistance to students, both respondents and complainants, in connection with confidential community standards cases.
Fosters positive working relationships and collaborates, as appropriate, with SHRL staff, the University Police Department (UPD), the University Student Conduct Administrator, Dean of Students office, Personal Growth & Counseling Center, Title IX, Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation, and Clery office, Student Disability Resources, and other faculty and staff in addressing alleged student community standards violations.
Consults and coordinates as necessary with administrators, parents, and other University departments to maximize student learning and development, community safety, and retention related to student behavior.
Confronts University and SHRL policy and community standards violations when observed, as well as assisting Resident Advisors (RAs)/Student Assistants (SAs)/Residential Life Coordinators (RLCs) with the resolution of difficult confrontation situations including but not limited to roommate and neighbor conflicts.
Makes referrals for students to other departments as appropriate.
Leads community standards training for Residence Life team members professionals, other SHRL team members, campus faculty/staff, and RAs in consultation with the Associate Director of Residential Life, Assistant Director of Residential Life for Training and Development, and University Student Conduct Administrator including but not limited to Maxient database use and management, sanction creation and implementation.
Develops and updates community standards material which includes, but is not limited to the following: Community Standards Residential Handbook, roommate mediation worksheets, health and safety inspection documents, policy documents, conflict resolution tips, rights and responsibility information, visitation communication, pet policy enforcement, emergency response, etc.
Data Reporting and Analysis:
Meets regularly with UPD alongside the Assistant Director of Residential Life for Care and Support to collect necessary information from UPD case reports into the SRHL case management software (Maxient).
Serves as a designated SHRL administrator for the conduct database, Maxient. This includes, but is not limited to, database operation and management, monitoring and maintaining records, running various reports as necessary, and maintaining/updating all training materials and presentations.
Assists the Associate Director of Residential Life in collection and reporting data in response to legislative mandates and other reporting requirements, including but not limited to, Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, Clery Act, CSU Chancellor's Office, and other agency requests.
Assists in coordinating assessment and evaluation processes and overall management of the community standards system including annual review of community standards handbook
In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Learning and Assessment, periodically conducts surveys and/or focus groups and/or individual interviews to assist in determining departmental goals and objectives related to the community standards process.
Responds to daily requests for information and assistance from SHRL staff, residents, and campus partners.
Performs analytics and prepares regular reports (i.e., suggestions for fall programming surrounding alcohol use, number of alcohol cases post fall programs, End of Semester Reports, etc.) to provide feedback to University partners about type, frequency, and response to violations of SHRL community standards on a regular basis.
Serve as additional liaison for students and identified SHRL campus partnership populations, including, but not limited to: international students, student athletes, students with disabilities, at-risk students, former foster youth and other identified populations.
Act as an additional contact for campus partner populations when requesting information.
Serve as a resource for SHRL around specific needs and issues for campus partner populations.
Act as an additional point of contact to any campus partners when working through residential projects, concerns, or agreements.
Work in partnership with Assignments Specialists and Associate Director for Operations & Finance regarding the assignments and early arrival support for campus partner populations.
Serve as the primary point of contact and chair of various department committees as assigned.
Identify issues in area or departmental concern and take initiative to resolve or report them and assist in the identification of potential solutions.
Keep a strategic focus on partnership building across campus as the department and University continues to grow.
Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the SH&RL program.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Display exceptional analytical skills to discern information relevant to the investigation and resolution of allegations of student misconduct.
High degree of personal/professional integrity, respect for privacy and confidentiality, a sense of ethics and a commitment to educating students.
Skills in conflict resolution, mediation, and problem solving to resolve complex situations excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to compose letters, memos, reports, and other written communication material for a variety of audiences (must use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills).
A working knowledge of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education. An understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, and multicultural issues.
Demonstrated skills in working with individuals and groups with a wide array of identities and life experiences, including gender, disability, race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, culture, religion, etc.
Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university AND at least two years of experience managing and coordinating residential programs. Working knowledge of the practice, procedures, management and activities of a housing and residential life program. Additional experience beyond the minimum requirement which demonstrates that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for up to two years of the education on a year-for-year basis.
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or a related field highly desirable. Additional experience within university housing community standards or campus conduct; experience as live-in staff; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; experience advising student groups; demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence; experience working with a multicultural population; familiarity performing community service learning; and demonstrated technical literacy.

The annual salary range for this position is $64,480-$73,000. Classification: Grade 6, Management. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
