Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit Professional-Track Lecturer in Theatre/Lighting and Sound Shop Supervisor – School of Theatre

The School of Theatre has a vibrant and racially diverse student population. We recognize the need to move toward creating an actively anti-racist and anti-biased space of creative practice. We have 22 full-time, professionally active faculty members who serve over 300 students in BA and BFA concentrations and in MFA programs in Acting, Design, Directing, and Theatre for Youth. The School mounts a yearly season of seven-to-eight plays and musicals, along with student-driven work.
Primary Purpose of the School
The UNCG School of Theatre educates and trains students as professional artists in performance, design and technical production, theatre for youth, musical theatre, music direction, and theatre education. Our rigorous BA, BFA, and MFA programs produce exemplary theatre artists with the knowledge, skills, and vision to work professionally in the performing arts. Our annual production season typically includes four mainstage productions in the Taylor Theatre; three-to-four productions in the Pam and David Sprinkle Theatre, our studio black-box/arena theatre; and the spring regional tour of the North Carolina Theatre for Young People.
About the School of Theatre: Our design and technical production faculty and staff provide extensive experience and training in scene, lighting, sound, and costume design including specialties in mask-making, welding, CAD design, and much more. The School of Theatre also offers training in theatre education, theatre for young people, theatrical intimacy, musical theatre and provides opportunities for developing skills in marketing, ticketing, and front of house operations.
As a member of numerous national theatre organizations, including USITT, SETC, TCG, and AATE, the School of Theatre offers a rigorous theoretical and practical education, along with valuable opportunities for students to network with theatre professionals and showcase their own work. Theatre students enjoy continuous opportunities to meet, learn from, and engage with leading industry professionals with guest artists. Position Summary Position Summary The School of Theatre at UNC Greensboro welcomes applications for a Professional-Track Lecturer/Lighting and Sound Shop Supervisor beginning August 1, 2023. We seek a versatile artist/educator actively engaged in advancing inclusion, equity, and access and celebrating cultural diversity while fulfilling a technical production role for the School of Theatre.
Professional-Track Lecturer/Lighting and Sound Shop Supervisor Job Responsibilities and Tasks: ? Teach (2) organized courses for the School of Theatre each semester – including but not limited to Stagecrafts: Lighting and Sound (100-level), Tech Production: Lighting and Sound (200-level), Theatrical Sound Design and Technology (300- level), etc. ? Mentor student electricians, sound technicians, and sound designers ? Contribute to mentoring of lighting and media designers alongside lighting/media faculty ? Attend design & production meetings; ? Attend technical & dress rehearsals; ? Maintain the Electrics and Sound Shops and related performance spaces; ? Teach and enforce UNCG and School of Theatre safety policies; ? Serve as an academic advisor to students in the School of Theatre ? Continue to build on current skills in racial literacy, intercultural competency, and culturally responsive teaching ? Interact kindly and effectively with people (including students, faculty/staff, audience, etc.) regardless of different age brackets, cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, (dis)ability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. ? Demonstrate commitment to advancing inclusion, equity, and access and celebrating cultural diversity. ? Oversee the implementation and management of all electrics and sound aspects of productions staged at and/or by the School of Theatre, including, but not limited to, load-in, focus, pre-cuing, notes, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and strike ? Supervise student crews through load-in, tech, performance, and strike for School of Theatre productions ? Responsible for teaching and enforcing proper safety protocols within the electrics and sound shops, during load-in & strikes, technical rehearsals, and performances. ? Supervise graduate & undergraduate assistants, work-study students, and Stagecraft/Practicum students, ? Track and report budget status to the Production Manager. ? Coordinate with School of Theatre faculty and staff on productions ? As necessary, serve as the Sound Designer for School of Theatre productions. ? Prepare detailed estimates of time & money needed for the lighting and sound elements for each production or event. ? Advise on matters of production requirements, feasibility, technology, etc. ? Read and respond to rehearsal and performance reports as necessary. ? Participate in Departmental and College Service
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s or equivalent professional experience, and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates
? MFA in Design and/or Technical Production ? Comprehensive knowledge of industry standard lighting and sound techniques and equipment ? Comprehensive knowledge of safety standards and other entertainment industry standards ? Experience teaching and supervising students in a theatrical setting at a collegiate level ? Practice utilizing a variety of flexible communication strategies to ensure student learning and success ? Proficient in theatrical/entertainment lighting – including, DMX (networked and wireless), Intelligent Fixtures, digital lighting consoles ? Experience with projection/media software and equipment ? Proficient in theatrical/entertainment audio – including, Dante, digital audio desks, wireless microphones ? Proficient with repair and maintenance of lighting and audio equipment ? Proficient with counterweight stage rigging systems ? Computer literacy (Vectorworks, Lightwright, audio editing software, MS Office, Google Suite) ? Valid Driver’s license ? This position requires the ability to climb ladders and stairs, work at heights, and the ability to lift 50 lbs. ? Experience with Yamaha digital audio desks and Shure Workbench ? Experience with ETC consoles, dimmers, networking systems, pixel mapping, Robe fixtures ? Experience with softwares – Vectorworks, Lightwright, and QLab ? Experience with soldering, repairs, and maintenance
