JOB SUMMARY
Northeastern University's growing impact-oriented research enterprise is increasingly developing along interdisciplinary scholarly directions aligned with major global and societal challenges. Research institutes are an effective means to promote and execute interdisciplinary scholarship, accelerate the University's contribution to knowledge, and increase its impact through successful transitions to society. This growing research enterprise, which crosses disciplinary boundaries and bridges colleges and campuses, is best supported through centralized facilities that are effective suppliers of experimental and computational capabilities to many research groups, centers and institutes. Central facilities maintain the research infrastructure of the University at the most advanced state possible while increasing access thereby making materially important contributions to the University and its research mission.
The VPRIF reports to the Senior Vice Provost for Research, sharing responsibility with the SVPR and the SVPR's leadership team for the success of the research enterprise of the University. The VPRIF will work with the SVPR to develop and implement a strategic plan for institutes and facilities. In this role, the VPRIF works closely with the Vice Provost, Research Administration, Vice Provost, Research Development, and Vice Provost, Research Economic Development and Director of Bio Innovation, and the Director - Strategic Financial in the Office of the Provost, as well as the directors of the University central research institutes, and the faculty advisors and technical directors of the University research central facilities.
The VPRIF refines and executes the strategy for central research institutes, including the creation of new institutes and operations of existing institutes. This work includes program and budget aspects. The VPRIF organizes the annual internal review of each institute through the respective Internal Advisory Boards, and the external reviews required periodically for each institute. The VPRIF prepares recommendations to the SVPR for the continuation or sunset of each institute. The VPRIF serves as the Chair of the Committee for Research Institute Directors and the Shared Research Facilities Oversight Committee. The VPRIF oversees the development and operation of research central facilities at the University including the annual process of establishing operational parameters. The VPRIF is an important voice in determining university investment in experimental capabilities within the research central facilities and the selection of proposals for instrumentation programs to agencies and foundations in which the numbers of submissions are limited.
