DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the Lab Assistant implements visit scheduling and subject retention activities for a multi-study research center investigating the causes and effects of neurobehavioral disturbances associated with HIV infection and/or substance abuse within the Department of Psychiatry. Duties include assisting with scheduling research participants; educating participants regarding study participation including visit protocol expectations; scheduling and tracking visits. Other duties include general lab assistance such as data collection, record keeping, data entry, and report generation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of experience in a health or social service field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Ability to prioritize workload and work independently and seek guidance or information when appropriate
Strong basic computer skills such as word processing and data entry, as well as experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Adobe PDF.
Demonstrated skill in communicating in a helpful, informative, and supportive manner on the phone, and in providing appropriate/effective interventions based on accurate assessment to a diverse group of study participants.
Experience scheduling research appointments and performing research interviews or needs assessments.
Work or education demonstrating familiarity with HIV infection, antiretroviral treatment, and related cognitive impairment.
Familiarity with San Diego health clinics and human service organizations that provide HIV, HCV and substance abuse care and service and demonstrated ability to provide referrals to these organizations.
Familiarity with cognitive assessment, lumbar puncture, MR structural and functional imaging, and/or nerve conduction velocity testing.
Demonstrated ability to create and sustain a supportive client-focused environment for clients with neurobehavioral disturbances associated with HIV infection and/or substance abuse.
Experience working with diverse populations, including ethnic and cultural minorities, gays and lesbians, people living with HIV, and people recovering from substance abuse.
Experience providing health education or other complex information to individuals with lower education and/or cognitive impairment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated ability to write and speak in Spanish and English.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Must be willing to work with people infected with the HIV virus.
Must be available to work overtime, including evenings and occasional Saturdays.
