Job Description and Desired Qualifications
The K-2 Lower School Reading Specialist is responsible for the literacy remediation of student support services in the Lower School at Redwood Day. This position reports to the Lower School Director, and collaborates closely with the 3rd-6th Grade Learning Specialist, the 7th-8th Grade Learning Specialist, School Counselor, classroom teachers, parents/guardians, and outside education professionals. The K-2 Lower School Reading Specialist will provide direct services to Lower School students through direct small group instruction in classrooms, collaborating with teachers to support and enhance differentiation, and ensuring the effective implementation of individual student Learning Plans.
Lower School Reading Specialist:
Develop strategies to meet the needs of identified students and plan for any necessary accommodations
Provide small group instruction to K-2 classrooms with a regular, consistent schedule to support differentiated instruction
Attend K-2 Student Support Meetings
Provide direct one-on-one or small group instruction to students who need support in grades K-2
Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings and other communications appropriate to ethical and professional standards
Serve as liaison between school staff and parents to assist them in understanding and supporting students’ academic needs
Provide informal pre- and post-assessments of individual students as requested by teachers, parents/guardians or administration
Coordinate meetings with families and teachers to discuss accommodations and recommendations
Coordinate and facilitate communication between student, family, school and other involved professionals
Initiate and attend parent/guardian conferences and team meetings as needed
Identify students needing accommodations in grades K-2; develop and coordinate instructional learning plans with long-term goals and specific objectives for identified students, including recommendation of in-school or outside resources
Consult with teachers, parents, administration and outside professionals regarding learning needs of identified students; prescribe modifications to plans, strategies, and materials for classroom and home interventions
Provide written reports to school and parents with assessment results and recommendations of appropriate diagnostic testing and remedial programs for school-related learning problems
Conduct informal observation of students and provide feedback
Facilitate any necessary parent/guardian group sessions/workshops on learning differences and support
Supervise students during breaks and recess as part of school-wide supervision schedule
Conduct K-5 Admission Assessments and provide counsel to the Director of Admissions

Training and/or experience as a Reading Specialist

Culturally competent
Effective communication skills
Master’s degree (preferred)
Pay Scale:
The anticipated salary range the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the full-time position of K-2 Reading Specialist is $74,640 to $97,490, depending on factors such as experience and education.
