About the Department:
The Academic Development of Student-Athletes (ADSA) is responsible for providing academic support services to all NCAA Varsity athletic sports at Southern Methodist University. The ADSA team recognizes there are unique demands placed on student-athletes; therefore, our support services are designed to assist the student-athletes’ personal, professional, and educational growth during their participation in Mustang athletics.
About the Position:
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
The Academic Counselor supports the academic success of assigned Division I athletic team(s).
Reporting under the Office of the Provost, this position promotes the ethical and holistic academic success of all SMU student-athletes by monitoring individual and team academic progress, retention and eligibility.
Additional responsibilities include the assessing of individual and team academic needs, facilitating and coordinating academic interventions, creating and updating various academic reports, providing campus referrals, contributing to the advancement of the academic unit.
This position will also participate in the educating of student-athletes, coaches and athletics on SMU, AAC, and NCAA academic rules, regulations and opportunities.
The Academic Counselor must be a proficient communicator who is expected to collaborate with faculty, staff, advisors, coaches, and other members of the SMU community.
Essential Functions:
Oversee academic services for assigned NCAA Division I teams & provide academic counseling for student-athletes as determined by the Sr. Director. This includes assigning & monitoring academic interventions such as tutoring, study hall, encouraging faculty interaction, etc. This position will regularly meet w/ coaches & athletics to advocate, educate & inform on student & academic affairs items. Monitor assigned student-athlete academic course and program progress, work and communicate w/ faculty for the purpose of enhancing student-athlete academic success. Provide referrals to campus support systems that support the holistic academic, mental, emotional and personal development for the student-athlete population.
Work closely with other departments to create personalized academic plans for graduate and undergraduate student-athletes. Coordinate major exploration, the registration process, and graduation planning. Provide policy & practice input.
Provide intrusive academic support and education for assigned teams on & off campus to include during team travel trips. Create and facilitate group and individual structured/objective study/academic accountability sessions for assigned teams, provide frequent academic support sessions focused on the development of executive functioning skills & course specific intervention support.
Collaborate on departmental projects with other members of the ADSA & SAES staff. Contribute to ADSA programming with innovative ideas, practices and solutions. Work closely with campus partners & assigned professional development entities to represent ADSA. Participate in new student on boarding and conduct prospective student-athlete sport specific recruiting presentations covering information about various SMU academic programs.
Abide by ADSA, SMU, AAC, and NCAA rules, regulations and processes. Other duties as assigned.
The position requires some evening, weekend, and holiday work. Occasional team travel is required
Education and Experience:
A Master's degree is required, preferably in education, academic advising, sport administration, psychology, other areas considered.
A minimum of one year of work experience in an athletic academic support setting to include experience as a graduate assistant required. Experience working in Division I athletics preferred. Familiarity with the industry of college athletics preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies, including faculty, staff, advisors, coaches, and others members of the SMU community. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. The ability to work in a fast pace environment that requires quick decision making and timely follow-up with students, coaches and colleagues is essential.
The candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. A strong focus on attention to detail is required.
The candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Team Works, People Soft, Canvas, and/or Qualtrics is preferred. Experience with conflict management is a plus. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team is essential.
The candidate must be willing and able to work non-business hours. Must also be willing and able to travel with respective teams.
