The Learning Center Director is the department's educational leader and supervisor by the school's mission, vision, and educational philosophy. The Director works closely with the Assistant Head of School and School Administration on curriculum and program development, pedagogy, supervision, and program implementation. The Director is responsible for ensuring that Learning Center faculty are given access to tools and resources necessary to enable each student to be optimally challenged, thoroughly engaged, and appropriately supported in learning. The Director supervises department faculty to provide expertise, guidance, coaching, and leadership to support faculty growth and development. He collaborates with faculty and administration across disciplines to ensure students receive appropriate support and differentiation in their classes.
This is a 12-month position with regular school hours with occasional evening and weekend hours.
Department Supervision & Hiring
Oversee the process of creating and revising student support plans, including testing and medical
Periodically revise/create Learning Center policies regarding testing accommodations, departmental vision,
student support goals (related to skills building and content support);
Ensure that testing accommodation policies and implementation are equitable, aligned with the school's mission, and honor each student's documented needs.
Create/maintain systems for the Learning Center faculty to document and retain records about student testing/standardized testing accommodations and student support plans confidentially and securely.
The lead collaborative process for faculty hiring;
Be a primary resource for teacher development, including the use of teaching and learning goals for each teacher, frequent observations with written and verbal feedback, and provision of information about teaching resources where needed; conduct weekly individual meetings with faculty focused on their professional growth; responsible for regular teacher evaluations and reviews; keep records and communicate with HR as appropriate;
Encourage and provide direct staff opportunity and time to attend conferences, workshops, and webinars for professional development;
Provide timely information to appropriate administrators about proposed changes to support services;
Collaborate with the Assistant Head of School to integrate measurement and research tools into departmental growth plans;
Vision & Curriculum Development
Clarify and hone the departmental vision ensuring that departmental goals align with the school mission.
Ensure a clearly articulated pedagogical vision for the department; lead weekly dept. Meetings centering on these areas and other school-wide initiatives;
Help foster a positive working and educational environment for students and colleagues and support the school's mission, vision, and values;
Strengthen the department's academic support services, including its overall impact on the school, and expand experiential, blended, and connected learning; continually review, develop, and enhance inclusion and differentiation services;
Lead department faculty in the use of data and technology in instruction;
Form and maintain connections with teachers, students, schools, organizations, and communities to bring new ideas and opportunities to the department and the school;
Director Administrative Responsibilities
Manage department budget, including resources for technology, professional development, and planning for the section number
Communicate and collaborate with external organizations that provide supplemental support to Learning Center students.
Act as the public face of the department, including managing communications within Gann and to the school community; proactively communicate with parents;
Create/manage the development of training and professional development for general education teaching faculty at various points of the year;
Work closely with the Director of Admissions and serve on the Admissions Decision Committee to ensure that prospective students have the potential to succeed at Gann Academy.
Oversee the professionalism of department members; ensure clear articulation of school policies and procedures and adherence to the Employee Handbook; work collaboratively with Human Resources and other members of the administration regarding personnel matters; keep appropriate records of faculty performance reviews,
Serve on the Instructional Leadership Team to represent Learning Center perspectives and advocate for Learning Center students' needs.
Co-teach up to two (2) classes made up of a combination of entire courses and/or modules; Prepare lessons and teach/support students; manage student behavior in and out of the classroom; communicate clearly and effectively with students in person and via email regarding classwork, homework, assignments, and learning; utilize technology and other educational tools to support student learning and other initiatives as implemented by School Administration;
Attend and participate in parent/teacher conferences and advisor conferences which may take place in the evening;
Keep records of correspondence with parents, the progress of advisees, forms of teaching practice, and student work, and utilize the school database appropriately to communicate student issues;
Take and record attendance; prepare and file reports, letters, grades, and comments as required by school administration;
Community Involvement & Engagement
Attend and participate in communal programs outside the classroom, including, but not limited to, assemblies, community blocks, guest speakers, and other special programs during school hours;
Attend and participate in open houses, graduation, and other special events which may take place in the evenings and weekends; faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting, student performances, art exhibitions, athletics, and other events and activities to support students and promote community engagement;
Although not obligated to attend or participate, all general studies teachers/administrators are welcome to attend, participate in, and help plan Shabbaton to the extent he/she/they would like.
Work with students outside of classroom time as needed; work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments;
Assist Learning Center faculty colleagues with substitution when possible; arrange class coverage as needed and communicate to the department, academic operations, reception, and HR regarding absences;
Professional Development, Growth, and Training
Attend and participate in all faculty/staff work-day programs, in-service training (including August and June in-service days), orientation programs, seminars, and safety training/drills.
Pursue professional development opportunities in or out of school; display willingness and ability to grow, learn, and practice self-reflection; work with an instructional director and other faculty and administration members on educational and pedagogical growth and innovative tools and techniques in and out of the classroom.
Perform other administrative or educational duties as assigned by the Assistant Head of School or designee; This may include supervising senior and internship projects; Providing extra support for students, such as managing study hall or staffing a help center; Advising an extra-curricular activity or club; Traveling to Israel with for class trip; Other administrative or educational duties as assigned by the Head of School or Assistant Head of School.
COMPETENCIES and SKILLS
Excellent customer service skills; ability to work with various people; strong communication, planning, and interpersonal skills;
Knowledge of and experience implementing support services for students with learning differences and different learning profiles, abilities, and willingness to continue to learn, research, and grow;
Working knowledge of and ability to interpret/understand neuro-psychological testing reports and testing reports that are typical of public school 504 and Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
Possess strong collaboration and team-oriented working and leadership skills along with the ability to balance the pursuit of academic and institutional excellence with compassion and nurture for each individual;
Possess an educational vision that aligns with the core principles of Gann Academy;
Ability to work independently and effectively in a changing, fast-paced environment;
Possess and exude a positive attitude and passion for teaching;
Must be proficient in English to carry out work as assigned.

Physical demands include dexterity for office machine/supply operation, including but not limited to computers, telephones, electronic calculators, copy machines, and printers. Stooping, bending, reaching for files or supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods is common.
