Position Summary: Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Interlochen Arts Academy seeks a dynamic film educator for the Film and New Media division who is eager to contribute to a vibrant program dedicated to the overall development of young visual storytellers. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of visual storytelling and its diverse history, drawn from professional experience as a filmmaker/writer/director and the pursuit of higher education. This is a full time faculty position.

• The Film and New Media Division at Interlochen Arts Academy consists of two tracks - Live Action Film, and Animation. This position will work primarily with the live action Film track. The teaching responsibilities for this position include 1:1 advisorship to film students, a course related to cinematography and shot design based story analysis; participate as a consulting teaching member of the Production Workshop, a class in which the entire community of film students enroll, in all stages of development of screenplays/productions/thesis/portfolio.

• The Filmmaker-in-Residence Cinematographer is a two year appointment. This resident artist position has the unique opportunity to serve as resident artist/instructor and cinematographer on a multi-year documentary project in coordination with the Greenacres Foundation; shooting a feature documentary that will show how the results of scientific research and close observations of nature make new efforts in sustainability, regenerative agriculture and preservation, a clear and emotionally accessible story. Some of this work may occur during the summer months.

• This person will provide creative, visual insights, design shots, and capture the compelling footage necessary to fully tell the story, liaising between Faculty Creative Director, Production Manager and subjects; collaborate with key crewmembers in aspects of planning/pre-production, production and post to ensure assets are delivered on time, and ensure workflow meets required deadlines of the project.

• Teaching responsibilities include one section of a Cinematography course developed in conjunction with the director of Film and New Media. Other responsibilities include scheduled tutorials with students, department activities, regular meetings, and daytime/evening. As a contracted faculty member, the FIR is also responsible for Advisor meetings with a share of Film Students.

• Professional behavior and appropriate use of facilities/equipment required.

• The Academy enrolls over 500 students, of which approximately 20% are international, and nearly 25% are ethnic minorities. Interlochen is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and strongly encourages applications from women, racial/ethnic minorities and other individuals from underrepresented groups. Interested faculty members may also have the opportunity for an additional contract to teach at Interlochen Arts Camp in the summer.

Essential Skills:

• Teach/mentor cinematography and camera skills based in clear understanding of story

• Cinematographer for Greenacres documentary project

• Provide group and individualized feedback for students

• Attend departmental meetings

• Attend weekly Community meetings

• Create appropriate curriculum and lesson plans

• Collaborate and innovate with other divisions at Academy

• Participate in other faculty requirements (e.g. committee work as appropriate, recruitment, screenings/guest series, film festival, Cinema Collective: Greenacres Documentary)

• Responsible for organizing day-to-day interactions with their respective students in the Film and New Media division, advising aspects of cinematography, camera technology and aspects of lighting.

• Help students become independent and capable community minded problem solvers within complex circumstances of filmmaking from script to screen.

Education: MA or MFA preferred, BA or BFA required

Experience: Professional experience leading a camera team, filming narrative and documentary content, and communicating with diverse group of subjects, actors in a variety of settings

Equipment Familiarity: Cinema cameras/lenses, basic lighting packages, sound recorders & microphones for acquisition, organization, rental

Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:

• Cinema cameras/lenses and support, video formats, storage and workflow, lighting packages, sound recorders & microphones for acquisition, organization, rental

Physical Demands:

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 35lbs); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in a standard studio, office, and classroom environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact. Varies according to specific position within the Film and New Media Division; host classroom conversations/presentations and also oversee camera in location productions in a variety of settings in all weather, familiar with safety and appropriate use of standard camera, lighting and sound technology
