DESCRIPTION
The University of California, San Diego, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Senior Hazardous Waste Field Technician works under supervision of the Operations Supervisor and performs such duties as collection of hazardous waste chemicals, radioactive materials and biohazardous waste from university labs and facilities. The incumbent processes hazardous waste materials skills including: segregation, compaction, vial crushing, solidification, recycling/reuse, lab-packing, consolidation, storage for radioactive decay, marking and labeling shipping containers and preparation of shipping documents and transportation. The incumbent will also provide assistance to university faculty, researchers, staff and private contractors in matters of accumulation, packaging, storage, labeling and disposal of hazardous chemicals, radioactive waste and biohazardous waste. Assist with all the lab packing for the main site and off-site facilities, perform weekly chemical inspections on-site and off-site, and service the Nimitz Marine Facility, Medical Center and other off-site facilities.
Database activities include the maintenance of the Chemical Waste Tracking System with new regulations and processing changes. This position will also provide coordination between resources and personnel to arrange special pick ups and provide work direction to Lab Assistant IIIs in accordance with EH&S goals and Emergency Management Facility (EMF) operating procedures. The Senior Hazardous Waste Field Technician is part of the campus HazMat team which responds to hazardous spills and chemical emergencies and assists with hazardous materials clean up.

QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience in an Environmental Health and Safety program working with hazardous wastes; or two (2) years of college including appropriate science courses and one (1) year of experience in an Environmental Health and Safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of county, state and federal regulations concerning chemical, radioactive, and biological hazardous wastes and the applicable transportation requirements.
Proven knowledge of basic chemistry, radiation, and biohazardous principles; health and safety requirements; and analytical techniques. Ability to follow procedures and perform spill cleanings.
Demonstrated ability to safely drive and maneuver trucks around campus while transporting hazardous waste. Ability to move or lift large chemical drums, carboys, bottles boxes, etc. using available carts, pallet jacks, or other devices. Ability to operate safely all equipment at the EMF including trucks and lift gates, forklift, hand trucks, pallet jacks, carts and other lifting aids.
Understanding of proper application and use of personal protection equipment including respirators, gloves, eye protection and protective clothing when in the presence of chemical, radiological, and biohazardous wastes and materials and the ability to monitor and train others.
Demonstrated ability to complete basic functions on a computer terminal using Microsoft Office Applications, including data entry, database queries, word processing, spreadsheet design and manipulation, flow chart, design, etc.
Understanding of the function of sustainability and the role of the EMF in reducing waste disposed as waste.
Solid verbal communication skills to effectively complete hazardous waste collection, management, and disposal and relate technical information to a diverse clientele using a professional and gracious manner in person, through email, and on the telephone. Strong interpersonal skills to interact with all members of a diverse organization.
Solid understanding of customer-service and quality performance techniques and procedures, and the ability to apply them in achieving quality and customer service goals.
