Job Summary Overview:
The Department of Graphic Design, in the Division of Architecture + Design, at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor, to commence fall 2023. Rank will be dependent on professional status and teaching experience.

RISD is engaged in the collective work of institutional transformation and would value applicants whose pedagogical and professional experiences have prepared them to foster equitable teaching and learning environments. We seek applicants whose teaching and professional work (creative practice and/or academic scholarship) attends to embodied difference as intersectional and centers on bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities. We seek candidates who use digital technology, including computation, to extend the reach of graphic design beyond static forms as a way to develop broader, more inclusive narratives, graphic languages, and critically engaged forms of communication. In particular, we invite candidates who are energized by the developing and shifting dynamics of 21st-century design and who investigate technology's relationship to power, pedagogy, and curriculum development. The ideal candidate is committed to collaborative practice, is an elastic thinker and maker, and values actively contributing to a vibrant, creative, and experimental community of learners.The candidate will offer both undergraduate and graduate studios and seminars. They will thrive in a wide-ranging, multi-faceted teaching environment, in a department that values the fundamentals of design, form, process, and communication, while at the same time exploring and expanding design with an emphasis on critical thinking, inclusive cultures, and varied contexts.
Candidates should demonstrate an interest in community and departmental leadership (RISD's academic leadership model presents possible future opportunities for department chair and/or graduate program direction) and in serving as advocates, mentors, and advisors. We are looking for a colleague who is deeply interested in joining the fabric of our community through teaching, advising, leading, mentoring, and departmental and college-wide service.
Job Qualifications Required:
- We seek candidates with an MFA in graphic design, visual communication, or a closely related field, or with an undergraduate degree in a related field and a record of scholarship and/or research in graphic design.
- At least 2 years of full-time teaching experience, or the equivalent in part-time teaching, including undergraduate and graduate teaching.
- Knowledge, experience, and a sustained engagement with tools and processes germane to contemporary design practice—in particular, experience designing for software, scripting in programming languages, teaching computation, and the ability to work and teach across media. Engagement with critical perspectives around making, working with tools, and designing for both digital and material outcomes.
- Evidence of sustained practice/practitioner work that contributes to the dialogues and the discourses of contemporary graphic design (in and outside of education; as a maker and a critical thinker; in and outside of the professional area).
- A demonstrated teaching and/or professional record that exemplifies inclusionary practice.
- A demonstrated record of inclusive leadership.
