The person in this position is a seasoned professional who provides immigration related advising and support for the 1100 international students studying at Portland State University along with other advisors in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services.
This position requires in-depth knowledge of principles, concepts, practices, and procedures of international education and F and J regulations to address complex and ambiguous issues. This knowledge permits the employee to plan steps for and carry out multiphase projects and to modify techniques to solve a wide range of problems connected to student immigration advising and international student retention.
Advising responsibilities include, but are not limited to, individual advising on complex and ambiguous immigration, personal and cultural adjustment matters, and provision of immigration information to students through a variety of channels. In addition to advising responsibilities, the person in this position:
ensures proper reporting through SEVIS, the federally mandated international student tracking system;
maintains files and monitors PSU's required compliance with SEVIS reporting requirements,
manages the SEVIS registration process each term, and;
administers benefits of F and J immigration status.
The person in this position works closely with the advising team in the Office of International Student and Scholar services which includes immigration, student life, academic and scholar/faculty advisors.
Seasoned knowledge and expertise in principles, concepts, and practices in designated field typically obtained through a Bachelor's degree and 4 to 6 years of professional experience OR Master's degree with 2+ years of experience within functional area.
Interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, patience and tact in dealing with people with limited proficiency In English; patience and tact in dealing with colleagues, community members and others.
In-depth knowledge of federal regulations pertaining to F and J visa holders.
Clear understanding of the SEVIS system: what the reporting requirements and deadlines are; how to file notifications and reports through SEVIS.
Ability to make judgments and decisions independently and In consultation with colleagues.
Writing and computer skills.
Ability to prioritize assignments and tasks, and to juggle various projects and issues at the same time.
Knowledge of PSU policies and program requirements; detailed knowledge of federal regulations affecting foreign students and scholars.
Detailed knowledge of Banner SIS, SEVIS, Sunapsis; ability to navigate in Banner.
