Position Overview:
This position reports to the Senior Academic Advisor and is a direct colleague to two other Undergraduate Academic Advisors. The position is responsible for supporting undergraduate students within the Department. To be successful in this position you should enjoy spending most of your day talking to students and colleagues, value diverse backgrounds and perspectives, enjoy project planning and management, and appreciate collaborative work.
Work from home opportunities are available to Academic Advisors in Computer Science & Engineering. CS&E advisors will be provided with an assigned office to work in on site.
Advising - (50%)
â— One of the assigned advisors for students in our Computer Science BA in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), Computer Science BS in the College of Science & Engineering (CSE), and Data Science BS in the College of Science & Engineering (CSE)
â— Advise students on degree program planning and registration through individual appointments, workshops, information sessions, and targeted emails.
â— Maintain student records on advisees and monitor academic progress; monitor student progress in order to intervene, advise and recommend solutions to academic difficulties, improve students' academic planning skills, evaluate student's curricular plan, and apply extensive knowledge of curricular options, requirements, and engagement activities to identify, compare, and contrast viable major and minor programs options that match a student’s interests and academic skill.
â— Update APAS reports as necessary to ensure timely and accurate degree clearance
â— Develop realistic, efficient graduation plans for students
â— Send annual reminders to advisees regarding dates, deadlines, and opportunities
â— Meet with advisees on probation or returning from suspension and set requirements for the removal of their academic probation
â— Refer students to appropriate faculty as necessary.
â— Direct students to college/university support resources in moments of crisis, including financial, social, personal, and academic.
â— Refine proactive advising techniques to enhance advising efforts.
â— Participate as an integral and active member of the student services team in the department, the college, and the university as a whole.
â— Provide quality student service to students and their families regarding the academic process.
â— Answer questions and inquiries and meet with students and their families as requested for both recruiting and advising purposes.
Advising Duties shared with advising colleagues:
â— Provide advising services to pre-major students and students seeking minors administered by our department
â— Assist with departmental orientations for new students: Complete all prep work and meet with upper division CSE transfer students and lower and upper division CLA transfer students.
â— Support the department’s integrated program through recruitment, advisement, and paperwork completion required by the program.
Student Services Related Projects/Appointments (25%)
â— Create, lead, and/or assist with equity and diversity projects being done within the undergraduate student services team and within the department as a whole.
â— Department Scholarships - assist in updating scholarship application; advertising scholarships to students; reviewing and awarding scholarships
â— Assist in planning and promoting the undergraduate pre-commencement celebration
â— Assist in compiling opportunities for the undergraduate mailing list.
â— Assist with the interviewing of undergraduate teaching assistants as needed by the academic advisor lead on this project
â— Attend regular meetings with advising contacts in other units
â— Attend university functions for professional development and to stay current on university resources available to students
â— Create a network of relationships with students, faculty, and campus staff to effectively deliver advising and support services to students, and serve as a liaison to other units.
â— Assist with events and tasks as needed for student groups associated with our department
Duties shared with advising colleagues (15%)
â— Update/maintain printed and web materials for the undergraduate programs
â— Responsible for updates to:
â—‹ CS&E undergraduate handbooks
â—‹ CS&E program four year plans
â—‹ CS&E program curriculum in PCAS
â—‹ Other undergraduate curriculum handouts for the department
â—‹ Advising related content of the front desk manual for staff and student workers
University-Wide, Collegiate & Department Citizenship (5%)
â— Serve on committees as needed for the University, College and Department
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Required Qualifications:
â— BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:
â— One year of advising, teaching, or related experience in a helping profession.
â— Familiarity with advising and student support services.
â— Education program-development or project management experience.
