The Roeper School is a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in grades Pre-K through twelve. We are seeking a full-time English Teacher for the Upper School (Grades 9-12) to join our Birmingham campus faculty for the upcoming school year.
We seek a teacher with expertise in English language and literature and who will engage students with classes that are challenging and participatory. The ideal candidate will have pedagogical insight and provides instruction in reading and writing that demonstrates skill in designing, developing, and delivering curriculum that is appropriate for gifted students and meets the diverse needs of individual students. The ideal candidate will have experience fostering a classroom culture that celebrates purpose, relevance, respect, energy, creativity, diversity, and opportunity.
Develop and deliver student-centered English programs tailored to gifted students
Develop, implement, and sustain classroom curriculum which fosters critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills of students
Facilitate the social and emotional development of the students and nurture their development with care and consideration of each student holistically
Serve as a faculty advisor to an Upper School Homeroom including modeling and encouraging use of Restorative Justice principles
Utilize knowledge of a variety of instructional and assessment methods, integrated use of technology, and excellent communication skills
Collaborate with department colleagues to coordinate curriculum content as well as scope and sequence of disciplinary skills
Collaborate with colleagues in development and documentation of curriculum and coordination of interdisciplinary learning units
Embrace and implement a multicultural and culturally relevant curriculum, in accordance with Roeper's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Assess students individually, primarily through narrative reports that focus on holistic growth
Share student progress with parents through communication including conferences and progress reports
Maintain effective communication with students, teachers, colleagues, and administration
Collaborate with Middle and Upper School faculty on school-wide initiatives and support of education through varied activities including meeting attendance, committee participation, events, and extended field trips
Supports the English department in the mission of the school
The preferred candidate will have:
Experience teaching English courses to upper school students
Experience teaching creative writing and overseeing student publications
Knowledge/experience working with gifted learners
Excellent instructional and communication skills
Ability to work independently or collaboratively to contribute and reach objectives
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in English, Humanities, Education or other relevant field is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred. A minimum of three to five years of teaching experience in an upper school is preferred.
