Columbia Basin College (CBC) seeks a Director for MESA. The focus of Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) is to improve diversity and retention in Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields by those students who are traditionally underrepresented. The Director for MESA at Columbia Basin College fulfills this mission in a number of ways, but mainly by managing the daily operations and strategic objectives of MESA as it relates to community college students attending CBC. Throughout the entire process of recruitment, enrollment and support, the Director works closely with students as they seek to transfer into, and successfully complete, a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field at a university. This also involves working with college personnel to plan events and ensure the meeting of goals. The Director for MESA reports directly to the Dean for Math, Science & Engineering and will receive additional direction from the Washington MESA Associate Director of Programs.

Primary Responsibilities:
Provide both academic and non-academic support to undergraduate students pursuing degrees in STEM fields; culturally sensitive, with strong knowledge and ease in working with academically and economically disadvantaged students;
Manage the MESA student center and foster a welcoming atmosphere for social and academic purposes to ensure that the center meets the needs of MESA students and facilitates cohort formation;
Coordinate, plan, and oversee recruitment/outreach activities, college prep and orientation activities, and events for MESA students, including university campus visits, transfer fairs, scholarship fairs, resume workshops, award ceremonies and graduation celebrations;
Recruit, interview, enroll, register, orient and provide both academic and non-academic support (mentorship, coaching, etc) for MESA students:
Serve as a resource director for MESA students – providing, directing and assisting them with appropriate resources for tutoring, financial aid, advising, counseling and other services;
Collaborate with counselors, advisors, faculty, and partner institutions to promote a clear and successful pathway for MESA students in STEM;
Facilitate the successful transfer to baccalaureate institutions of MESA students through the full spectrum of MESA program activities;
Assist Grant Writer with grant writing;
Collaborate with the Foundation on fund-raising proposals;
Collect, track, analyze, and report data from faculty and institutional research staff, for student participation including success data for MESA students vs other STEM students and adjust or plan accordingly;
Attend and actively participate in MESA meetings, conferences, banquets, student check-ins and other activities (including occasional overnights), ensure successful implementation of the MESA program in accordance with MESA statewide office guidelines and serve as primary contact for Washington MESA at Columbia Basin College, and occasionally host MCCP state activities on the CBC Campus;
Create, develop, and implement initiatives to increase success, retention and completion of MESA students at CBC, and recruitment of students (especially target underrepresented minority students) specifically to STEM programs;
Provide and/or develop engaging materials promoting MESA activities and the MESA program for print and electronic distribution (i.e. brochures and quarterly newsletter) in consultation with Marketing and Graphics;
Recruit and oversee the student tutors within the MESA Center;
Meet bi-weekly with the MESA PI and/or faculty sponsor, and at least quarterly with the MESA Steering Committee;
Create a MESA Annual Report for Washington MESA administrators, CBC staff, faculty, and administrators and a MESA Annual Program Plan (MAPP) for CBC MESA staff;
Administer and/or supervise grants associated with MESA and meet the expectations of STEM initiatives; responsible for all reporting and data collection;
Assist students in securing internships and research experiences for undergraduates to enhance overall academic experience and increase student confidence to make them competitive for transfer;
Code all MESA participants for each quarter enrolled using ctcLink as specified by the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges (SBCTC);
Maintain office supply inventory and order materials for MESA student center;
Maintain a textbook inventory and library loan program for MESA students and ensure they have proper access to math/science textbooks each quarter with book and material pick-up times for students;
Monitor and prepare MESA budget expenditures with appropriate documentations, and perform reconciliation as needed including: program budget and Services and Activities (S&A) Budget under Principle Investigator (PI) and work with the University of Washington Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) staff to develop, coordinate, and integrate activities for LSAMP Scholar, as well as manage any LSAMP budget funds provided to CBC;
Organize and prepare Academic Excellence Workshop (AEW) training material, train and supervise MESA facilitators on the MESA AEW model following the MESA Community College Model and assess the efficacy of the AEW facilitator trainings, workshop outcomes, and overall scheduling;
Track and monitor student worker payroll; and
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM related field from an institutionally accredited college or university;
One (1) year of experience in higher education or other complex organization;
Experience with Microsoft Office applications (such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and databases; and
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse students and demonstrated experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
Columbia Basin College (CBC) serves the citizens of Benton and Franklin counties in Washington state with two-year associate degrees for transfer to a four-year university, and applied degrees for workforce employment. CBC also provides one-year certificates and basic skills for those pursuing a GED or high school diploma.
