DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Each of the ten residential colleges at UC Santa Cruz employs a team of academic advisors who work with students through the entirety of their undergraduate career. College academic advising serves as the generalist branch of advising at UC Santa Cruz, focusing on all career-based requirements (general education, university, college requirements) and applying academic senate policy including academic standing, progress, and time-to-degree. College advising works collaboratively with others at the college to ensure a coordinated approach to serving students' academic, residential, and developmental needs, and works collaboratively with academic advisors in the academic departments and with other advisors on campus.
The primary mission of College advising is to assist students in identifying and clarifying their academic directions and educational goals, and to help them to develop meaningful and compatible plans and success strategies.
Develops, manages, and implements the colleges' academic advising programs. Utilizes knowledge of relevant research and best practices in higher education to develop programs and lead advising services in the colleges that address the academic and developmental needs of diverse populations of undergraduates, including academic orientation, academic success, and student retention programs. Supervises Student Academic Advisors who provide professional level academic advice to students. Provides technical assistance to advisors on complex issues such as exceptions to policy, recommendations to change policy, and precedent-setting actions. Participates with management in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for Student Academic Advising. Represents the student academic advising function on committees and other organization entities as needed. Responsible for oversight of advising projects and initiatives, coordination, program development and evaluation.

Directs Student Academic Advisors who provide the full range of academic advising to students and service to the college provosts and faculty. Provides training and development, monitors and evaluates employee performance. Recommends employee selection and corrective action, if necessary.

Provides academic advice to students from diverse backgrounds to assist them in the clarification of their educational goals and realistic plans to achieve those goals. Advises on all aspects of their academic experience, including academic progression and general education, university, and college requirements.

Provides guidance and assistance to the most complex and / or precedent-setting issues. Researches and analyzes complex student cases, and makes recommendations to college provosts and academic standing committees on appropriate actions.

Oversees the development and implementation of college-based student programs and workshops with learning outcomes related to academic and student success. Analyzes data on retention, graduation and student success to evaluate the need for new programs and effectiveness of current programs.

Participates in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures, and recommends to college and campus advising leadership changes in policies and procedures. Oversees quarterly student progress monitoring processes and ensures the college advising office is compliant with FERPA and UC privacy policies, and with student records disposition policies and schedules.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Demonstrated ability to advise undergraduate students on clarifying their educational goals and developing plans to achieve them, as gained through substantial related academic advising experience in a college or university setting.
Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs, and ability to learn new systems.
Skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Project management skills.
Skills in social perceptiveness. Demonstrated excellent communication skills, including oral and public speaking.
Demonstrates excellent written communication skills.
Demonstratesability to effectively interact with students, faculty, staff, and parents of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, and an understanding of the challenges faced by diverse student populations (including but not limited to first generation students, underrepresented minority students, students with disabilities, low-income students, LGBT students, non-traditional students, veterans) in higher education.

Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in a field related to academic advising, or equivalent work experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
