Purpose of the Position:
A member of the Leadership Team (Student Experience Council), the Dean of Student Life provides leadership and direction to all programs impacting student life including character formation, relational health, discipline, and co-curricular activities. Works with the Assistant Head of School and Student Experience Council to create a positive and nurturing school culture rooted in Providence Mission and Values.
Major Responsibilities:
Campus Safety and Student Health/Safety
- Plans and implements emergency, fire, and lockdown drills and works with PSJMC and Disney on disaster preparedness. Updates and communicates emergency procedures and protocols with entire community on a regular basis.
- Serves as the point person for COVID-19 compliance procedures and case management. Leads the completion and communication of all School reports regarding attendance and health & safety protocols for local, city, state, and accreditation bodies.
- Coordinates with Leadership Team on school-wide messaging and sends text message alerts as needed.
- Approve all school-sponsored activities (on and off campus), including field trips and activities outside of school hours. All permission slips/field trip proposals are initiated and completed through the office of the Dean of Student Life.
- Serves as central liaison with Burbank City Police Department and maintains that working relationship with our designated School Resource Officer(s).
Student Activities and Events
- Coordinates the planning of the school master calendar, schedules all events, apportions the school venues and is responsible for daily bulletins/announcements.
- Coordinates with the Assistant Head of School on graduation ceremonies.
- Oversees the planning of the Welcome Party for all new incoming students. Partners with Admissions and Enrollment Management Department.
- Supervise faculty moderators and all co-curricular student activities of the school
Character Formation/Discipline
- Develops and oversees effective student conduct and disciplinary policies (stated in handbook) based on restorative practices, to promote and foster the personal growth, development, and wellbeing of all students.
- Collaborates with the Dean of Equity, Wellbeing and Human Development on student concerns regarding sensitive background information, student interviews, conflict resolution, and consults with the DEWHD on policies/procedures and incidents regarding diversity, equity and social justice. Partnership with the DEWHD is integral to our school-wide approach to anti-racism, equity, and social justice, especially as it relates to approaches to discipline, character education, and situational management.
- Support faculty in progressive and values-driven classroom management, formation of students and discipline. Conduct annual and as-needed trainings to support faculty approaches to student behavior.
- Oversees the annual review and updating of Student/Parent Handbook in all areas except Academic and Financial policies.
- Communicates with parents, faculty, and staff, as appropriate, regarding any student health, campus safety, or discipline issues.
Administrative
- In coordination with the Assistant to the Dean of Student Life, assures that proper attendance records are maintained on all students.
- Supervises and directs the work of the Assistant to the Dean of Student Life in the following areas: student parking, student locker assignments, and faculty supervision duties.
- Programming and monitoring of daily bell schedule and special bell schedules
- Assists the Assistant Head of School in the development and maintenance of proper and up-to-date administrative operating procedures.
- Conducts regular evaluations with the Athletic Director and ASB Director to determine effectiveness of the student activities and athletic programs and makes recommendations for changes.
- Responsible for general school operations in the absence of the Head of School and Assistant Head of School.
- Contracts with drug dog service and escorts the handler around campus during random monthly sweeps.
- Serves as point person for all third-party campus requests/usage (e.g. filming) to ensure proper rental agreements and insurance are in place prior to any external school use.
- Teaches 1-2 classes.
- Performs special assignments as directed by the Assistant Head of School.
Professional Development
- Stay current and informed of best practices in the field of secondary education as it relates to student discipline, restorative justice, school culture and climate, and school calendars/scheduling. Serves as a thought-partner with and makes recommendations to the Assistant Head of School.
