The McCarthey Campus Emotional Support Counselor acts as a warm and supportive presence who promotes the overall social-emotional health and well-being of students in the Beginning School and Lower School, and provides support and resources to families, faculty, and administration. The next counselor will join a Rowland Hall team that understands SEL is essential in an extraordinary academic program, sees and celebrates the differences amongst our students, and is committed to helping children meet their full potential.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Provides direct support to students, via short term counseling and intervention
Assists with school transition for new students and families
Partners with teachers and administration to understand and support the social-emotional health and well-being of students in each class
Conducts counseling sessions for small groups of students dealing with similar social and family issues when appropriate
Provides support, resources, and referral information to families and acts as liaison between families, outside support systems, and the school when necessary
Coordinates, monitors, and is directly involved in the implementation of the social skills curriculum, Second Step, for grades 4PreK-5th grade
Functions as a resource to classroom teachers implementing the social skills curriculum
Supports the Chapel program by integrating social-emotional learning, character education, and themes of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
Communicates necessary information regarding children’s needs to teachers whenever possible
Act as liaison between the school community and local city/county agencies
Skills and Requirements
A successful applicant will have:
Masters degree in school psychology, counseling, social work, or related field
Experience working with preschool- and elementary-age children, as a counselor and/or teacher
Experience building and implementing an SEL curriculum and program
High degree of cultural competency and demonstrated ability to build relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
Excellent communication skills, with particular emphasis on communicating with parents and caregivers in a clear, calm, and supportive manner
Sensitivity and respect for confidentiality issues arising in a school community
Collaborative approach to problem solving
Student-centered educator who has a genuine interest in and appreciation for the developmental needs of young children
