PRIMARY PURPOSE: Clinical department chairs mentor the division chiefs, faculty, and staff within their assigned department overseeing the development, delivery, and assessment of the clinical curriculum for their area of expertise. The Chair will oversee a strong program of research and scholarly activity related to their department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Academic:
- Responsible for planning, developing, and evaluating the clinical curriculum including topics, courses, and methods of instruction that relate to their department in years 1- 4 as assigned.
- Participates in the instruction and supervision of medical students at all phases of training including didactics, small groups, clinical cases, clinical skill labs, clinical patient care, simulation training, procedure, and task training, and standardized patient encounters.
- Supervises the development and implementation of the clinical rotation curriculum associated with the department for the third and fourth-year medical students.
- Oversees student performance and assessment of third- and fourth-year medical students on clinical rotations in the department.
- Assists in the development of early clinical experience opportunities for students in years 1 and 2.
- Supports departmental Clerkship Directors and faculty at Regional Clinical Sites.
Administrative:
- Promotes a general atmosphere of respect for knowledge, thought, and inquiry within the University, the COM, and clinical settings.
- Promotes a general atmosphere of respect for students, faculty, staff, and patients within the University, the COM, and the community.
- Mentors the clinical faculty in the planning, development, and evaluation of courses and academic programs within the University.
- Oversees the management of the departmental budget, allocating funds appropriately to efficiently utilize resources.
- Motivates and provides feedback on the performance for assigned faculty and staff.
- Participates in the appointment and promotion process for faculty within the department. Reviews all faculty appointment applications for the department and provides recommendations to the appointment and promotion committee. Also, reviews all department faculty for eligibility for reappointment.
- Meets regularly with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs to provide updates on the department.
- Participates in fundraising activities.
Clinical Practice:
- Participates in clinical activity with designated clinical partners providing quality clinical care and meeting expectations for practice such as timely completion of medical records and measures for quality care as mutually agreed upon.
- Participates in international and regional medical mission trips and programs including required travel, preparation, clinical care, and supervision.
- Participates in regional community outreach programs to support the mission of the COM.
- Maintains competency, licensure, and certification in the field including required continuing medical education hours. Keeps abreast of new developments, guidelines, and advancements in literature.
Service:
- Serves on committees within the medical school and University as assigned.
- Represents the COM by serving on state and national committees.
- Serves as the faculty mentor for student interest groups related to the clinical department as needed.
- Serves as a faculty advisor and provides mentorship for medical students including students pursuing residency programs according to the established procedure for career planning and counseling.
- Mentors and oversees clinical faculty in residency match mentoring, leads a chair letter writing process in the department, and provides other key aspects of providing career guidance to medical students.
- Participates in interviewing applicants for potential admission to the COM.
- Participates in required COM faculty development.
Research:
- Leads the department's research and scholarly activity strategic plan.
- Encourages faculty involvement with educational, clinical, or biomedical research and scholarly activity.
- Develops a strong research-focused team dedicated to advancing medicine.
- Participates as an item writer for the USMLE and NBOME.
Supervisory:
- The Chair is responsible for supervising the department's clinical faculty, division chiefs, and assigned staff.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience Qualifications:
- DO or MD degree required.
- Must have an active and unrestricted state medical license and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license and be able to obtain unrestricted medical licensure in PA.
- Board certification is required within the specialty by either the American Osteopathic Association or the American Board of Medical Specialties.
- Candidates will be considered from all specialties including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OBGYN, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Pathology, and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
- Clinical Department Chairs must have a previously demonstrated commitment to education with a minimum of five years of experience in teaching and academic leadership in a medical education setting.
- Strong candidates will have significant experience with curriculum development, clinical skill education (clinical cases, entrustable professional activities, and milestones), medical student assessment, student career advising (including the residency match system), graduate medical education standards, and standardized patient and simulation education.
- Must have excellent written, verbal, management, administrative, and organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
- Must be able to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, and students as well as build and unify teams.
- Must have the ability and a track record of mentoring faculty and students.
- Must be able and willing to practice clinically and supervise Duquesne University medical students.
- Must be supportive of the mission of the COM and be willing to collaborate with the University and COM leadership to achieve the mission and vision.
