Position Summary
The Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPF&A) is the chief financial, business, and administrative officer of the Arts & Sciences with oversight of financial matters, human resources, IT, capital budget, and other business operations. With a goal of strengthening the impact and ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the largest unit at Columbia University outside of the Medical Center, the VPF&A will bring strategic leadership, tactful management, a focus on transparency and data-driven decisions, and a high level of energy with a can-do, mission-driven mindset.
Reporting to the EVP for Arts & Sciences, Amy Hungerford, the VPF&A is a strategic partner to her and a key member of the Arts and Sciences??? administrative and academic leadership team. They will build strong relationships, inspire creative thinking, and encourage inclusive processes within a highly complex environment. Working with the Deans, the faculty, the leadership team and in partnership with Columbia University???s central financial and operational leadership, they will be key in shaping the future of Arts and Sciences and enabling the delivery of its strategic direction.
Responsibilities
The VPF&A is responsible for leading finance and administration at the school and is a strategic partner to the EVP in the development of all academic financial planning and policies for Arts and Sciences, and a key player in formulating the overall strategic plan for Arts and Sciences. Specifically, the VPF&A will:
- Work closely with the EVP to formulate and implement financial and operational strategies and plans that enable the realization of the academic goals and social mission of Arts and Sciences.
- Collaborate closely with the Deans and the faculty leadership in integrating academic and financial planning and ensuring that resources are deployed in a manner that is consistent with the overall strategic priorities of the Arts and Sciences.
- Develop short and long-term financial plans in accordance with the Division???s academic objectives and implement strategies to proactively problem solve and ensure balanced fiscal operations.
- Assure optimum utilization of financial resources through sound forecasting to assess the financial status of the Division. Maintain annual and five-year forecasts for the operating and capital budgets of the Arts and Sciences.
- Oversee the preparation of management reports to facilitate communication with internal offices and
- departments, external constituencies, and the wider University community.
- Build strong, consultative relationships with the Deans, faculty, and business officers at each of the five
- schools and twenty-eight departments to ascertain creative ways to manage finances and drive efficiencies.
- Promote and foster an inclusive community with exceptional standards for diversity, inclusion, collegiality, and professionalism.
- Cultivate strong, mutually beneficial relationships with the leaders in central administration and the peer Deans and VPs of administration at other schools.
- Enable the investment in information and technology to encourage innovation.
Cultivate and mentor the senior management team through consistent professional development opportunities and regular evaluations.
Communicate with clarity and frequency to key stakeholders of the Arts and Sciences- faculty, schools, and departments in the Division as well as to central University administration; listen actively; help promote broad-based budget education for participants across the Arts and Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications
An advanced degree in business, public policy, or a related field. Fifteen-plus years of experience in financial and operational leadership roles in complex environments, with exposure to a broad range of financial, operational, risk, and compliance management principles and practices.

Higher Education or Relevant Non-Profit Background
An understanding of the academic mission and budget/resource planning in complex institutions of higher education or mission-driven enterprises is desirable.

A strong, strategic orientation with the ability to serve as a strategic partner and advisor to the EVP as well as collaborate closely with other leaders on the senior administrative team and other parts of Columbia University.
Analytic Approach
Relevant use of financial models, financial analysis, performance measures, and metrics to understand complex situations, inform decision making and communicate decisions. Able and willing to cultivate detailed, ground-level knowledge of varied units with unique subcultures for effective, tactful problem-solving and oversight.

Academic Credentials
