Stanford Medicine is a world-class academic medical institution comprised of Stanford University School of Medicine, a research-intensive medical school, and Stanford Health Care, a regional hospital system that is nationally recognized for quality patient care and leading-edge technology. Stanford's top-ranking Medical Center Development (MCD) team supports the goals and purposes of Stanford Medicine including a significant focus on securing resources to realize the aspirations of the medical enterprise in alignment with the Stanford University-wide strategic vision.
MCD seeks an experienced Senior Director of Principal Gifts to identify, cultivate, solicit or arrange for the solicitation of individuals, families, and family foundations with the philanthropic capacity to make a gift of $10M+ for the School and Hospital's highest priorities. In this role, you will manage the Principal Gifts team with five direct reports. The team includes three full-time gift officers, one patient relationship manager, and four administrative staff. In addition, you will engage with a multitude of individuals including school and hospital leadership, university officers, faculty, volunteers, alumni, friends and foundation representatives, and others outside Stanford during the course of the team's fundraising work. This position requires extensive collaboration university-wide across the Office of Development. The Principal Gifts program raises a significant portion of MCD's annual fundraising totals and will play a fundamental role in securing lead philanthropy underpinning institutional priorities. The Senior Director will report directly to the Associate Vice-President, Medical Center Development and will be a member of MCD's executive leadership team, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Associate Vice President of Development who has responsibility for lead gift fundraising for the Stanford Vision.

In this role, you will:
Lead the Principal Gifts program of Medical Center Development including carrying out all aspects of fundraising, strategic direction and growth, and staff development.
Develop and monitor annual strategic programmatic goals and fundraising success, implementing appropriate interventions when necessary.
Personally manage approximately 30 - 50 relationships with consistent focus and high - touch engagement, cultivation and stewardship that leads to successful solicitation strategies. Demonstrated success in raising 8 and 9 figure gifts for the institution.
Focus extensively on prospects in Silicon Valley and globally who are new relationships for the university entering through the Stanford health care system and representing the ability to broaden the reach and scale of MCD's fundraising and relationship network.
Collaborate closely with university leaders, faculty, and volunteers to foster relationships that will be productive for Stanford Medicine and shape compelling ideas that will attract transformational gifts based on institutional initiatives and presidential priorities. Accompany leaders on calls where appropriate.
Staff and manage the Stanford Medicine Cabinet, a small, hands-on working committee consisting of senior university volunteers who provide strategic guidance, serve as university ambassadors regionally and beyond, and identify and solicit principal level gifts.
Work with grateful patients, hospital and school executive leadership, community members, alumni, parents, and friends of Stanford Medicine and their advisors. Will often work behind the scenes through high-level volunteers, both external and internal to the university.
Partner closely with colleagues in the University Principal Gifts program and with senior officers of other schools on donor-centric strategies, including coordinating cultivation and solicitation of prospects where there are multiple interests.
Maintain a current body of knowledge about Stanford Medicine's development priorities, the university-wide priorities of the president and provost, and programs and aspirations of all seven of Stanford's schools and units where Principal Gifts are needed.
Collaborate with other teams within Medical Center Development, particularly Major Gifts, Planned Giving, Research, Donor Relations, and Development Communications.
Provide stewardship for Principal Gifts donors managed centrally, in coordination with other stewardship units and field fundraisers.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
Bachelor's degree and 10 years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience leading and managing a fundraising program with a team of highly experienced fundraising professionals.
Proven ability to achieve results working through others - facilitating and enabling others to act will be as important as actions taken directly.
Commitment to a collaborative culture, with the patience, persistence, and flexibility to build consensus and facilitate decision-making across multiple constituencies.
A high level of comfort and effectiveness working with high net worth individuals, business executives, and community leaders.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and engage through highly effective presentations and communication. A clear and confident communication style that shows spirit, enthusiasm, and integrity.
Proven skills in managing a number of competing priorities and complex issues creatively and effectively. This may include long-range strategic fundraising, donor development, and volunteer engagement with the day to day operations.
Superior listening skills with an ability to collaborate, build team spirit and achieve results within diverse populations.
In addition, our preferred requirements include:
Ability to develop long-term relationships with donors and prospects. Previous experience in a campaign is highly desirable.
Experience working in an academic environment and staffing senior academic leaders on donor calls as well as at volunteer meetings and events is desirable.
Exceptional negotiation skills and the political savvy to navigate a complex academic environment.
Certifications and Licenses:
Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver's License.
Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class driver's license.
May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
Valid passport for international travel.
When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
