DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences is composed of 65 faculty 14 clinical fellows, 4 Assistant Project Scientists/Postdoctoral Fellows. The department is composed of 7 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Hospitalist, Family Planning and Urogynecologic and Reconstructive Surgery. The department is currently ranked 5th in the nation in NIH funding among ObGyn departments.

This Lab Assistant 2 will work at the Moore's Cancer Center under the supervision of the P.I. to performing mouse tumor experiments in support of NIH-funded research. Three main lab functions are mouse colony maintenance, mouse tumor biology, and lab support. Main responsibilities are to perform breeding, monitoring, and weening of mice colonies. Previous experience required. Assist and learn (to independence) experimental implantation of ovarian tumor cells in mice. Assist and learn (to independence) experimental administration of agents to mice by gavage or injection. Candidate will have strong communication, team work, and recording keeping skills. Candidate will assist with media and buffer preparation, learn and maintain laboratory equipment, have strong organizational skills to maintain lab stocks, and work to ensure that laboratory spaces are clean, safe and compliant with University regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Theoretical knowledge of microbiology and cellular and molecular biology.

• Ability to assist with basic aseptic and tissue culture techniques.

• Ability to work with cell culture, media preparation, and DNA electrophoresis.

• Ability to follow step-wise experimental protocols.

• Willingness and ability to handle small animals.

• Ability to use basic laboratory equipment including centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances, pH meters, and electrophoresis equipment.

• Willingness to become familiar with proper handling of chemical and biohazardmaterials.

• Willingness to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety andenvironmental issues.

• Familiarity with computer software and databases to analyze data, store results and compute raw data.

• Willingness to learn organizational skills as they relate to maintain lab equipmentand supplies.

• Willingness to work with other staff members, students, faculty etc.

• Ability to perform basic PCR, and cloning techniques.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in handling mice, performing oral gavage, and colony weaning.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
• Must be available to work some weekends and evenings to complete experiments.
