The Office of Residence Life at Simmons University seeks passionate student-centered candidates for the position of a 12-month full-time live-in Area Coordinator (AC).Simmons University is a private university, home to a respected women?s-centered undergraduate program of nearly 1,800 as well as coeducational graduate programs on the ground and online. The AC is responsible for creating a caring and inclusive environment for residents and staff members defined by a genuine sense of belonging and memorable moments. The position provides high-touch student support, serves as a conduct officer, and participates in the on-call rotation (including during the summer months). A critical aspect of the AC responsibilities is the active support of relationship development between staff members and residents. Reporting to the Director of Residence Life, the Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for community and student development in the university?s residence halls. The Area Coordinator (AC) provides leadership and supervision for 1-2 Graduate Residence Directors and 6-12 Resident Advisors in a residential area of approximately 300-400 students. The AC is responsible for creating a caring and inclusive environment for residents and staff members that is defined by a genuine sense of belonging and memorable moments. The AC is responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and developing staff. Other major areas of responsibility include: community and student development, administrative and managerial responsibilities, upholding community standards, facilities management, and professional development for staff. This position contributes to the development of the Simmons University student population through a variety of experiences including developing social, educational, and leadership initiatives. The position provides high-touch student support, serves as a conduct officer, and participates in the on-call rotation (including during the summer months). A critical aspect of the AC responsibilities is the active support of relationship development between staff members and residents. The AC assesses, contributes to, and oversees the implementation and enhancement of student learning outside of the classroom through a wide range of programmatic opportunities. The AC will play an important role in the development of our new residential curriculum.Principal ResponsibilitiesProvide leadership for a residential area of 300-400 students, including supervision and evaluation of 1-2 Graduate Residence Directors (GRDs) and 6-12 Resident Advisors (RA);Provide direct support and guidance to residents through programming, counseling, and referral designed to encourage the academic, emotional and social development of each student;Coordinate the development of programs in the residential area by working with GRDs and RAs to create high-quality, educational and impactful programs; oversee programming budget and track programmatic efforts for area;Conduct on-going weekly supervisory meetings and staff meetings;Attend weekly supervisory and ProStaff meetings;Participate in the after-hours on-call duty rotation throughout the year;Serve as a hearing officer in the residential student conduct process;Dedicate time to meeting individually with residents, who need assistance, support or mediation;Participate in annual department processes such as opening and closing the residence halls;Facilitate inspections of student rooms and buildings to maintain appropriate standards of health, safety, and maintenance;Conduct purchasing, payment and reconciling processes for residential area;Assist in the assessment of Residence Life programs, process and initiatives;Participate in the recruitment and selection of all levels of staff in the department;Collaborate with ProStaff members in the planning, facilitation and evaluation of training for professional, graduate and student staff members;Serve, as a representative of the Residence Life department, on division and university-wide committees;Participate in presentations and panel discussions for Admissions events;Collaborate with other university offices, such as Facilities, C&W (Custodial), Public Safety, Student Financial Services, Dining, Office of Accessibility Services, Center for Global Education, Spiritual Life, and Athletics;Assist the Director of Residence Life with projects, assignments and tasks as assigned.Required Qualifications Master?s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or a related field;A minimum of 1 year graduate or postgraduate Residence Life experience;Supervision of residence hall staff or other staff members in college or university residence halls;Demonstrated commitment to student development, persistence and success;Ability to interact effectively with students, staff, and campus partners from diverse backgrounds;Understanding of and commitment to principles of social justice and inclusion;Knowledge of quality customer service practices and specifically how to successfully address student and parent concerns;Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal skills and attention to detail;Demonstrated understanding of the educational environment at a diverse, private, urban institution;Experience addressing individual student and community behavioral matters;Ability to think critically and effectively plan and organize work;Ability to exercise considerable judgement and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships;Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook;Ability to demonstrate a commitment to service excellence embodying Simmon?s core values, mission, and vision in every aspect of the role working with students, faculty, staff, and visitors;A positive and professional demeanor is expected;Willingness to work irregular and flexible hours.Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of StarRez or other similar housing database software programs;Knowledge of Maxient or other conduct database software programs;Experience working directly with Living-Learning Communities or Theme Floors and/or build faculty partnerships;Experience enhancing students' academic achievement through collaborative efforts, or programmatic development;Demonstrated commitment to student development and educational programming; including, but not limited to: advising student groups, providing leadership training and on-going development.
