The Extension Center for Family Development helps families make informed decisions leading to better health, financial security, and wellbeing. We accomplish this by developing, delivering and evaluating credible, relevant and research-based education; working closely with others across Minnesota to build the strengths of individuals and families of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds; conducting and collaborating on research projects; recruiting and retaining expert faculty and staff passionate about families and their success; increasing the understanding of our work among key stakeholders; securing resources to sustain and grow programs that meet emerging needs and support strategic priorities. Extension Center for Family Development programs currently focus on family relations, family resource management, and health and nutrition, with special effort in the areas of families in transition, building healthy and strong families, and preparing for an aging Minnesota.
ABOUT THIS POSITION
Extension Center for Family Development is committed to building family resource management skills and knowledge of individuals and communities to thrive and evolve in all stages of life and circumstance. Our work in financial capability has historically reached a diverse audience. Our train-the-trainer has reached hundreds of agencies and in turn thousands of participants - many who are immigrants, refugees and speak another language than English.
This Family Resiliency Extension Educator position will help accomplish the above initiatives statewide. The person in this position will provide education, forge new relationships and partnerships, train other organizations, support and collaborate with stakeholders, and engage and educate public policy makers. Extension educators are part of an Extension promotion track and are required to continue professional development in scholarship and/or the corresponding research-based area of expertise, report on annual activities and impacts, and develop an annual professional plan of work.
This position is a full-time position. Academic Professional and Administration (P&A) position at the level of Extension Assistant Professor. The person in this position will report to the Program Leader for Family Resiliency. This position is a statewide position but will be located in Northeast Minnesota.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Leadership, Teaching, and Program Management (50%)
- Design, develop, deliver, implement, and evaluate a continuum of family resource management programs and initiatives that:
- Attract new and diverse audiences historically underserved by Extension.
- Are appropriate and effective for diverse internal and external audiences.
- Are based in scholarly and scientific theory and research.
- Exhibit high-level teaching skills for optimal audience engagement and impact.
- Integrate the levels of the Spectrum of Prevention and public health approaches for greatest impact.
- Provide education and ongoing technical assistance on continuum of family resource management with community partners statewide and nationally
- Provide program leadership on statewide or national programs, projects, or priorities as assigned for the development of pro-active educational programs using innovative educational methods.
Public Engagement and Relationship Development (30%)
- Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholder groups, including families and program participants to Identify and co-create place-based solutions that are responsive to family resource management issues.
- Represent UMN Extension and the University with federal, state, and local agencies or partnerships.
- Foster and contribute to a positive work climate with colleagues, advisory groups, audiences and partnerships.
- Collaborate with other Extension personnel regionally and statewide to enhance program delivery.
Research and Scholarship (20%)
- Use engaged models to explore effective program processes, activities and outcomes.
- Contribute to the field through dissemination of knowledge gained through applied research, program evaluation, or innovative program implementation
- Seek external resources to improve, expand, and support new, innovative program models or approaches to meet community needs.
APPOINTMENT/SALARY/BENEFITS
- This full-time position has an annual University academic professional appointment as Assistant Extension Professor, job code 9623. The appointment is reviewed for renewal annually, with continuation dependent on performance, results, availability funds, and program needs.
- Promotion in Extension academic rank is required and is contingent upon accomplishments as an Extension Educator

- This position will be located out of one urban office, most likely a Regional Extension Office.
- Salary is competitive and commensurate with the professional experience and qualifications. The estimated salary range is $60,000 - $65,000.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Human Development with an emphasis on family resource management or a closely related discipline at time of application.
- Demonstrated experience with applying or integrating research-based knowledge into program design, delivery, and evaluation.
- Worked with families experiencing poverty, hunger, drug addiction, immigration, incarceration and historical trauma.
- Demonstrated commitment and achievement in advancing diversity and inclusivity.
- Ability to work effectively and collaborate with people from various cultural backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.
- Ability to implement innovative public health approaches to promote policy, system, and environmental changes to promote environmental and systems level changes on family resource management issues.(e.g., access to traditional and alternative financial systems)
- Demonstrated experience in establishing, building, and sustaining partnerships and collaborations with local and regional financial institutions, community organizations, local and state networks and coalitions, state and government agencies that support financial management.
- Experience in conducting basic qualitative or quantitative research skills to be able to translate and communicate financial literacy research to key stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Evidence of using technology for teaching, communication, information-gathering, program delivery, and/or reporting.
- Ability to regularly lift, push, pull, carry a minimum weight of 30 lbs. multiple times weekly.
- Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time working on the computer.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with required liability insurance, to be utilized for frequent travel within Minnesota and infrequent travel outside Minnesota.
- Personal cell phone that can be used, as needed, for work purposes and to be published in staff directory.
- Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including occasional evening or weekend work, to meet the special needs of programs.
- Reliable internet and ability to work remotely.
- Must be able to stand and present educational programs, etc.…
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in Human Development, with an emphasis on family resource management or a closely related discipline.
- Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC)
- Ability to speak a 2nd language in addition to English.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate trauma informed approaches and principles into research and practice.
- Experience with resource development, including demonstrated success in writing, securing, managing, and implementing grants and contracts.
